wk2 20 inch rims

Hi All!

I just took delivery of wk2 overland hemi (my previous drive was Jeep Commander - fantastic car).
I just can't wait to get the new vehicle on the beach!

My question is if anyone has had experience with the 20inch rims on sand / beach. I very nearly got the 18 inch rims but the dealer convinced me that the 20's would be OK for beach driving.

I will be taking the rig onto the beach 3-4 times a year (Fraser Island, Moreton Island, Double Island Pt, etc). Will unlikely ever be doing any hardcore mud / rock type adventures. Has anyone out there had any experience with the 20's on soft sand, what tyre pressures to use, etc?

Any tips would sure help put my mind at ease...

Thanks!

On the really soft stuff I drop to about 17. Not much difference between 17 and the recommended 20 psi but it makes me feel better. But have no worries about the ability to navigate sand with the 20's. Very capable for what you're looking to do.

Oh yeah, use sand mode!

Hi Brett
Same part of the world and thinking exactly the same way. We want to be able to handle the inland tracks of Fraser, Moreton, etc. About to order an Overland CRD this week and will probably just go with the 20's as off road is less than 10% of our driving. I'm probably more concerned about wifey kerbing them on gutters, etc.

I almost ordered the CRD but just couldn't handle the 5 month wait! The hemi is awesome (and in stock) and they won't discount the CRD due to demand - I figure the discount will pay for the first few years of extra fuel bill.

Yeah the current 20's are a much nicer looking wheel I think. Gotta watch those gutteres though! I'm definitely feeling more comfortable now after the input from you guys... Can't wait to actually get on the soft stuff and test them myself.

Thanks heaps!

I'm also assuming there is no need to remove the front air dam just for sand driving (It looks like a painful procedure)?

I've never been in sand soft enough to require removal.

I did my own calcs and worked out I would have to pick up the Hemi for around $5K less than the CRD to work out the same on the monthly lease charge. The feedback I have been getting is that anything near that is almost certainly unlikely to achieve.
As for the drive, I would be happy with either CRD or Hemi.

Yeah I came to a similar conclusion. I ended up getting the hemi for about $4k less so was happy with that (it was a really tough negotiation though). I was in the vehicle within 7 days of signing the dotted line!

My commander had a small air dam that got in the way on the deep sand tracks - but it had no lift. Sounds like with the extra height from quadra lift it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again...
