Mopar/Kicker upgrade amp installed

Picked up a slightly used kicker amp and polk tweeters from a JG member (thanks heather) and immediately installed the amp. Not sure if it's my imagination or the fact that the kicker upgrade is intended to include a separate amp and sub but it seems I've lost a good bit of the lows with the kicker amp installed with just the oem boston accoustic speakers. I have an infinity basslink in my 01XJ that I might temporarily more to the WK till I figure out what I want to install permanently. Also need to figure out if I'd be better off buying just 6x9 mids for the front doors instead of the kicker upgrades that come with the 6x9s and dash tweeters.

Install went without a hitch using the mopar instructions.

Mopar/Kicker amp and polk tweeters.

joe wjhat you need to remember is the jeep is set up quite uniqe . it has crossovers that limit some types of output on certtain speakers.

and the experts will correct me if I am wrong but like the front. you have tweeters/mid in the dash and woofers in the doors. the rears handle all of it. so replacing with other speakers that handle the same duties, ou may lose even more.

also, have you engaged the surround sound. check wkjeeps or google it to find the how to engage it.

i had the setup like you, ba speakes kicker amp for a while and I thought it really was a good all around improvement

Yeah I did switch it back and forth between the surround sound and the normal setting. I am thinking the kicker amp might cutoff some of the lows going to the doors as it was designed to go along with a 2nd amp feeding a sub. Seems even bumping up the base setting in the audio menu doesn't really change things as much as it use to the the oem amp. Not a big problem really, as it does sound a lot cleaner now and will be plenty good once I figure out a sub setup.

from what little i know, it doesnt change the power to each speaker, as much as it provides cleaner power.

I think you might be correct, in that the new Kicker amp has a higher cutoff point for your dash and door speakers than the Boston amp has. The Kicker Upgrade was meant to have a sub installed to handle the bass end of it. I am not familiar with either amp so I dont know if there are settings on them you can adjust, but I think they were set for a simple plug n play feature with no adjusting needed, or possible more like it.

Not true, as the components are not sold as a "package", the subwoofer is optional and not required for the system. The sub is used to augment the performance of the main speakers. The front door speakers provide mid-bass while the sub provides low bass. The FIRST thing I noticed when I upgraded my system (amp/speakers and no sub) was how much the bass was improved, very noticeable!

If you replaced the amp and door speakers with the kickers than you now have a midbass speaker in each front door, 2-way tweeters in the dash and a 2-way combo in the rear doors. That's a little different than the stock boston acoustics and it wouldn't surprise me if you are hearing more lows sitting in the driver's seat.

I have ordered the kicker speakers for all four doors and the dash and hope to have them installed by mid week. Considering I've only spent $360 total (shipping included) for the amp and 6 speakers, I got a feeling I'll be happy enough to put off a sub/amp for a little longer.

Yep, and the improvement is well worth the $$$.

That's a great deal (near wholesale), you won't be disappointed.

I stand corrected then. Here I was thinking the "kicker Upgrade" was getting the amps/speakers/ and sub.

Great info on how you wrote "the sub is used to augment the performance of the main speakers", And "the front door speakers provide mid-bass while the sub provides low bass", I wasnt aware of this until now.

What are the low cutoffs on the Boston amp compaired to the Kicker amp?

Here is my "upgrade", its not the Kicker system but I think its good enough for me.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...8/DSC02874.jpg

Just a simple JL 10W6v2 sub in a sealed enclosure.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...8/DSC01708.jpg

Just simple JL XR650 components in the fronts for a little bit of added midbass in the front.

http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/k...8/DSC01119.jpg

Just a JL 450/4 amp for my door speakers and a JL 500/1 amp for my tiny 10W6 sub. Not the best but it seems to be a little louder than stock.

I have never been able to find detailed specs as Mopar typically does not release or provide them, and the OEM companies rarely offer info due to contract agreements.

Re: Mopar/Kicker upgrade amp installed

Im willing to bet 75 cents that the cut offs between the two Boston and Kicker amps are different, with a higher cutoff on the Kicker amp. With the lows, or mid bass a 10 or 20hz cutoff difference would be noticable.
