99 wj starter acting lazy.

Hello all,

my 99 wj has a mysterious slow-to-start problem. The starter is turning the engine over too slowly to start without a few attempts. This does not happen all the time, occasional occurs on cold mornings, however will sometimes happen in the middle of a warm afternoon in the grocery store parking lot. this is a 4.0 engine.

I had a dealership check the starter, battery, alt, etc. this afternoon and everything checked out fine. The terminals at the battery have been thoroughly cleaned, and visually all cables appear to be fine. I suspect that I have a bad ground cable, starter cable, etc. that appears fine, but is actually rotten somewhere.

The starter appears to be the original, and the jeep has 92,000 on the odometer. Thanks for any advice.

When you try to start it, do the dash lights go dim, or stay lit normally?
I would check and clean all terminals from starter motor solenoid and ground connections. If this all seems to be ok, it could be your starter/solenoid.

The lights stay strong, nothing seems to dim. I'll check around again to be sure all terminals are in decent shape. If it is the starter, anything wrong with getting mine rebuilt, or is there an upgrade I should be looking into?

Not too much experience on starter motors, but if a rebuild would be much cheaper then new i would say, why not.
I would especially remove/clean/install the 2 high amp connections on the starter solenoid and the ground connection for the ground wire from the solenoid. A little resistance on those points can already give problems for the starter motor.
