JGC 2012 or 2013

Jeep and Jeep Garage noob here. Apologize in advance if this question has been asked recently. Did a search and didn't find anything. My wife and I have decided to buy a JGC overland edition due to an expanding family and the utter inadequacy of our compact cars.

My question to you Jeep experts is whether it would be better to wait for the 2013 model years to hit the lot or whether the difference is minimal enough to just go with the 2012? We realize we may have some more negotiating room buying a 2012, but ultimately we want the best vehicle for our money. Additionally, when should I expect the Overland to realistically be on the lot in Minnesota. Ideally we would have it by the end of September since we won't want to be car shopping with a newborn. Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond.

Re: JGC 2012 or 2013

Welcome. Personally, I would wait for the 2013. Read the Sticky section above explaining the differences/changes. There are more than enough upgrades to make it worthwhile:

New: Headlamp washers (Overland Summit)
New: Power-Folding mirrors (Overland Summit)
New: ParkSense System, Front and Rear (Overland Summit)
New: 20" 5-spoke Black Vapor Chrome wheels for SRT (on special model)
New: Bright White exterior color for SRT8
New: Trailer Tow Group delete option for 4WD Overland models
New: Laredo 20" Wheel and Nav Group option
New: Optional Black interior for Summit model

If I were buying a new car, I would buy a newer-year model rather than the last of the previous-year model.

Good luck.

With all the changes for the 14's I wouldn't be buying anything til they come out in jan 13 if I'm not mistaken.. But if u need it before a baby arrival then I can see where u would go with a 12 or 13. But last time I checked in the sticky the 14's will be out early and your 12 or 13 will be 2 or 1 model yr old that quick.. Good luck with the baby and jeep. We have 3 kids under 4 across ours. It works nice for us..

You don't need to wait until 2013's to show up on the lots. You'd probably start seeing them in August. But even then, pickings will be slim as dealers will just get a couple in.

You should be able place a factory order already (as of last week); they'll start producing them in July. You would then probably get it in early August.

Thank you for all the reponses. This site is just incredible with all the info! It is almost data overload and is making the buying decision even more difficult!

It seems stupid now to buy a '12 or '13 since the '14 comes out in only 6 months. I have never done a factory order before though. Is there room to negotiate when doing this for an Overland? What could I expect? Thanks again!

So to me it sounds like there are basically no changes whatsoever to the standard Overland. Unless you get a Summit which has a few additional features, but you didnt mention that so I would say either one would be fine.
The only benefit to the 2013 would be one model year newer which could have some effect on resale down the road.

Im not sure what kind of time frame you are in and if its something you need soon, but I would personally wait for a 2014. Now thoise are gonna have some amazing changes. That 7" Evic looks insane!!! That along with that new nav setup im ready to trade my 2012 Overland in already :-)

Maybe I should start saving to trade in for a 2014.

I decided to wait for a 2014, the updates seem to be worth it to me.

It seems to be the general sentiment that the Overland Sumit edition has most of the big changes from '12 to '13 and that the '14 is the way to go if I can wait.

I'm not too concerned about resale value, since this will be a vehicle that we will have for several years and then probably keep in the family after we are done with it. I guess I'll have to chat with the wife about getting the '12 now vs. waiting until winter for what sounds to be a much superior product in the '14. Delayed gratification is so hard!

On negotiating, I got 5400 off msrp on my limited order and I have seen plenty of people getting really good deals on orders.. I think it's easier to negotiate between dealers on an order since you are comparing the EXACT same setup at all dealers you price shop at. Compared to different options on different jeeps at different dealers...

Oh and on waiting. I bought my 12 in march. If I woulda known 14's would have so many changes and be release so early, I woulda waited...
