4.7 Oil

Anyone ever consider synthetic 5W40 Diesel oil in their 4.7 WJ? Hmm

No, why would you?????
Diesel oils need other additives due to the different combustion process and different blowby gasses which will be mixed in the oil. The wrong additives could cause sludge or varnish buildup inside the engine.
Also the 5W40 will be thicker at operating temperatures then the 5W30. This could be ok for a more or less worn engine though.

Re: 4.7 Oil

when i was younger and didnt know better i had an 87 grand prix that only had 87K miles on it with the chevy 4.3L v6 and i decided one day i would change the oil and i saw this oil on sale so i bought it not even paying attention to the oil weight. i put Shell Rotella T 15w20 oil in it and it ran perfectly fine all day the next day i started it up it sounded like 2 hammers fighting. i must have a thrown a rod or a bearing or something pretty bad. but i drove it like that till about 96K when it finally gave up. ever since then i have never strayed from the OEM recommended oil weight. that and i know a bit more about cars.

Re: 4.7 Oil

I wouldn't recommended it with the weight being different.

However, diesel oils have more cleaning additives in them and if you run them for around 500 miles they can help remove any built up sludge in the engine. I never tried it but I was tempted with my last car which had noisy hydraulic lifters - traded it in on the Jeep instead tho...

Re: 4.7 Oil

The problem with removing any varnish or sludge buildup is that if bigger parts come loose, they can block the oil pump screen and cause oil starvation.

I ran 5w40 Rotella in my Jeep. No problems. I run Rotella in everything I own and operate.
