Hey,'s ok!
Guys/ girls, I never posted any, only in my introduction.:o I do however read all the new posts, specially the technical stuff.

I only have my Jeep for a couple of weeks, and noticed a leak on my front differential. After reading some threads on fluid change and maintenance, I decided to DIY the problem ( do all on my classics).:)

No problem draining, removing and cleaning diff. There was only a couple of mil. lube left....luckily she is not a daily driver. Never heard any strange noise or hesitation from the drivetrain. Visually no metal shavings or colour change on gears, caught it in time, I hope.

Sealed with Locktite RTV, refill with Castrol Axel EPX 80W-90, good?
I know some of you may think it is a minor repair, but to me it gives confidence to do more major future repairs. I intend to do fluids on the rear diff and transfer case also, and will read the relevant threads.

The oil should be ok, as long as you don't have Quadra Drive, because then it needs limited slip additive as well.

I do have Quadra Drive, but only use the vehicle on tar. What is the benefit of the additive? The oil was expensive, bought 2 litre, only used
about 1.2 lit. The salesman checked in the cataloque for the appropiate
oil. I think we also do not have such a large variety of products as the US. I may venture offroad sometime, not serious though.

Should I change to something else, or just add the additive?:confused:

If you don't use the additive and make a tight turn, one of the wheels will rub/slip over the ground and make strange noises. This because the Vari-lock inside the diff will lock both front wheels together, but in a turn the inner wheel travels less (so less revs) then the outher wheel, so one or both will rub.
The limited slip additive will allow a small amount of slip inside the Vari-Lock, preventing the tire rub.
Have a look if the fluid used doesn't have the additive in it, some are pre-mixed. if not, you can still add it.

Thanks for clearing that up Frango, the oil does not have the additive. I will add some.

I experienced Death Wobble yestersday!! Need to read some threads, nearly soiled my pants....:o.

The Death Wobble is mostly caused by play in suspension bushings, steering control rods, steering gearboxand/or ball joints. Also check tire pressures to be even. Eventhough uneven tire pressure should not be the real reason for the wobble, it can increase the effect. Also worn shocks will do so.
