Sit back, grab a cool drink, this is gonna be a long post...

Boy, am I pissed at Car & Driver Mag. this month.
Just one day after I closed the deal on my new SRT8, I opened the newly mailed August 2012 issue, and find a comparo called "Heavenly Heathens". I'm sure many of you will read it, so I'll spare you the messiest details. But some things do bear repeating, so here goes.

In this comparo, C&D tests the SRT8 against the M-B ML63 AMG, the BMW X5M and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. Priced in that order, from low to high. The BMW wins, and that doesn't bother me so much, my wife drives a 2011 BMW 335i Coupe and it is simply wonderful. Everything is great, switchgear, steering, brakes, suspension. If the X5M is a similar performer, it deserves to win.

What pisses me off, is how much they slag the SRT8. Oh, they start their tirade admitting it might not be fair, after all the Jeep is $34,160 cheaper than the as-tested price of the eventual winning BMW, but then they quickly dispell that and claim "the frugality doesn't overcome a battery of behavioral faults"... C&D's words.

So, here's how the SRT8 actually compared in the tests.....
0-60 mph....within 0.5 to 1.0 seconds
1/4 mile......within 0.7 to 1.2 seconds (13.7 & 103 vs. 12.5 & 113 fastest)
Skidpad.......within 0.01 to 0.06 G's !!!
Slalom.........1.4 seconds faster than ML 63 AMG..tied second place X5M
..within 0.3 seconds of Porsche
700 miles 14 mpg.....beat ML 63 AMG by one..tied X5M
..one less mpg than Porsche
70-0 Braking......SRT8..163 feet
..ML 63 AMG...............164 feet
..Porsche Turbo...........166 feet
..BMW X5M.................172 feet
...and the Porsche was equipped with optional ceramic composite brakes at a cost of $8840 USD. I kid you not.

One praise they had for the SRT8....."it sounds as glorious as a Corvette".

C&D Summary for SRT8.....Shy on sophistication, long on hot-roddishness.

Well, I guess so! Isn't hot-roddishness what you buy a performance SUV for? And that braking nonsense......if they all had to stop from 70 in a row with the SRT8 at the back, it's stock Brembos would be settling it serenely on it's Bilsteins, while the BMW buried itself Cat. converter deep into the Porsche (with it's 9 grand special ceramic brakes). Hahahahaha!

With all this new information, I then went to each vehicle's website and did a "Build and Price". I used the same criteria for fees, taxes, green levy, license, fuel, admin, PDI and then took the same after-tax discount percentage that I got from my Jeep dealer, (1% yippee) from each.

Now you all know what you paid for your SRT8, and the difference among all of us is probably a few thousand dollars either side of 75 large. Compared to what I actually paid for my new ride, here are the results of my pricing exercise.....
ML 63 AMG .........$ 43,696 more
BMW X5M............$ 49,524 more
Porsche Turbo......$ 99,650 more!!! Hahahahahahahahaha!!!

Give me two SRT8's and a couple of trips to Italy any day.
Wow.....now I feel better!!!!:lol::thumbsup:

Always nice to put things in perspective. I guess that value and price are actually one and the same in this round up.

the endless comparos, the endless timesheets, the endless runs/slaloms/break-stops/0-60s/price/options, and on and on and on... the debate has been raging for as long as i can remember now.

the best thing of all, even with the significant (read ridiculously huge) differences in HP/torque/transmission/MSRP, Jeep SRT8 still continues to be compared with the likes of Cayenne Turbo, X5M/X6M, ML63 AMG, Range Rover Sport SC! Just the idea of comparing this American muscle-monster of an SUV with those legendary machines is unbelievable. They keep setting this beast amongst those legends when there's not really any comparison. Up the HP/torque on SRT8 to 550+ and then set them loose!

i recall reading another old comparo (at C&D) between the older SRT8/X5M/Cayenne T/RR SC; the SRT8 ranked 3rd overall.

no matter what, i will always find the comparison grossly misleading. I think with these specs, the SRT8 still kicks ass in the face of those German uber-SUVs and looks awesomely stunning while doing so!

did i mention that ML63 looks like a kitten in comparison? a furry lil fluff-bunny. seriously.

Sometimes I wonder what these testers are having for lunch. Aren't these the same guys who complained for decades about American cars that go fast, but are over-priced and can't turn or stop? Here they get their hands on a relative bargain that could blow the doors off any of the similarly priced (read.. base) models from Europe, and they still can't find any virtues.

Here's the comparo I would like to see:

All prices Canadian base price:
SRT8.....................$55,395
Cayenne (300 HP)....$56,600
ML 350.................. $57,900
BMW XDR 35i...........$61,800

I'm thinking the Jeep would blast past all these base models in any test, and would still be the lowest price.

So the cheapest one compared to it is over $40,000 more !!!!!!!!!!, and one is $100,000 more !!!!!!!!!!! Besides the price some of those are limited editions anyway. So how about they compare a SRT8 done by someone like Hennessy for an equal comparison.

Yes, the Hennessy would be a good comparison, given that it has the horsepower and other upgrades and is in the same price range.

BTW, none of the prices were based on limited editions for the Euro group. I just optioned them in a build and price as closely as I could to the SRT8, using the same models tested by C&D. There are many more expensive options that could have been piled on.

Thanks for that Overspin I was just steaming, and reading too fast. I still think some of those models are limited by price if nothing else. I'm very frugal as you can maybe tell since I purposely brought the 08 Laredo. I have considered buying a SRT8, but wouldn't think about one of those others. Dollars to dollars I'd take the SRT is better anyway, and wait until one of those things breaks-lol.
