Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Hey all-

My dad has put about 3K miles on his 2012 Hemi Limited GC...

He is starting to regret his choice for the v8 as it noticeably misses at about 1500 rpm, his old 03 v8 Explorer with 100 less horsepower and torque would run circles around it and my mom's 06 MDX with about the same power as the explorer (I believe) is much faster as well... and it idles/cruises roughly like a 4 banger with the ECO mode function, will not downshift unless hammered and even with all this gas saving BS is a major gas hog compared the the explorer and definitely the MDX. The explorer was only about 150-200 lbs lighter and the gear ratio was only a bit steeper at 3.73 from 3.45. He was hesitant to buy another chrysler product to begin with.

Is there a flash programmer out there to wake this thing up or is there something wrong with it? No codes but I wonder if it is only hitting on 6 or something?

if I were him I would voice my concerns to his dealers service dept. There are a few things holding the hemi back...weight, gearing and the ETC.....but maybe something is going on with it?

I hated the ETC and trans programming in my 06 WK Hemi. Drove me nuts. The ETC went out around 16K miles and almost got me killed as I pulled out to a 45mph road.

The Hemi does "seem" to have a miss under light throttle and at low rpm. I'm wondering if the 5 speed transmission is hunting and can't find the right gear?

I think the hemi is way underpowered, that's why I got the V6

You can't be serious. The hemi is by far the most powerful engine I've ever owned. When I want to merge, I do. When I want to pass, I do. The only problem in either case is finding myself going a lot faster than I intended. This truck will go from 40 to 100 faster than any I've ever driven or ridden in.

Maybe I should get out more.

There's something very wrong with his truck, or your guys perception. The Jeep "should" easily outrun the MDX and Explorer, and a GC in working order will. I'd say there's something very wrong with it.

The other option is that you are just perceiving it as slower. The Jeep is so smooth, quiet, and heavy that it is deceptively slow feeling.

We've had a few Explorers in my family, my Jeep gets better fuel economy than them. Only my dad's V8 Sport Trac gets anything better, and only a little bit and on the highway. Such is the cost of an extra 70hp, 4x4, and a much more refined cabin. But my Jeep gets better fuel economy than either of the 6 bangers we had.

I dunno how much power the "hemi" is supposed to have. My V6 has 290, displaces 3.6L, so that's almost 81HP/L. So the 5.7L "hemi" must get 460HP, right?

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Depending on what you've driven before, the Hemi in the Jeep is actually not that powerful. And, the JGC with either engine will never be regarded as "quick." I"ve come out of a couple of BMW's, and most recently a Lexus IS350, and although both had less HP , they were far quicker than the JGC.

Its more than just pure HP...its gearing and more importantly how much weight the engine has to move. The JGC is heavy to start with, add 25 gals of gas and 4 occupants and all of a sudden it doesnt seem too quick...:o

I wasn't making any comparisons. It was simply a joke. However, I do realize the hemi is much more powerful than the pentastar.

I think the tranny kills it. The Hemi in almost every application it has ever been in doesn't perform up to its HP/Torque ratings. Most comparisons, reviews, etc place the Hemi's performance about even with the 4Runner and V6 Pathfinder with the V6 GC being slower still. Hopefully the coming 8 speeds will bring performance up to the numbers the engines are making.
