Factory-style WK sub install
 
I was pretty happy with the Mopar Kicker speaker and amp upgrade, but I thought the system needed some help in the bass department. The Kicker sub was difficult to find and expensive for what it was, so I decided to go my own way and design something unobtrusive.

I had a few requirements when I started out. It needed to fit below the cargo cover, not block the cargo tray in the floor, be easily removed for cargo room, and look stock.

I started out by figuring out what sub I was going to go with and decided on the JL 10w6v2. I next took some measurements and designed a box that would meet my requirements and also provide the volume spec'd by JL. This is what I ended up with:

Next, I built the box and test fit it in the Jeep:

For mounting, I decided I would hook the box in to the LATCH anchor on the seat like the Mopar sub. I modified a piece of fence hardware to do the job.

You can't see in the photos, but I also mounted low profile rubber feet and a carry strap to the box so it would be more portable.

Since I wanted to be able to remove the box quickly, I needed a simple way to disconnect the wiring. The first idea was banana plugs, but I wanted something that couldn't short when left disconnected. I decided to go with a SpeakOn connector designed for PA and DJ gear and mated it to some two channel 12AWG speaker cable from KnuKonceptz

To interface the JL 500/1 amp with the stock system, I connected an AudioControl LC2i to the rear door speakers. I had planned to hide a switch somewhere so I could disable the amp when the box was removed. Since the connector has four terminals and I only needed two, I decided to make use of it instead. I hooked one pair of wires between the LC2i remote output and the 500/1 input. I tied that pair of terminals together inside the box so the circuit would be closed when the box was plugged in but open otherwise.

I hid the amp and LOC in the cargo tray cutout and am really happy with how everything looks and sounds.

I have my amps in the same place, but I've run into some heat issues. Took a trip from Chicago to Des Moines a couple weeks ago and had the 4channel amp shut off on me – overheated. Drove back to Chicago a few days later with the cover open but was a pain in the ass to pack around the big opening in the floor. Anyone done this type of amp layout with fans built in somewhere to remedy this problem?

I've ran a JL 500/1 and a JL 300/4 under the cargo area for a few years with no real issues. Long road trips included, and they never shut off on me. I was worried about the heat issue, but no issue thus far.

I haven't had any issues with it. With 9.5V inputs and it crossed over pretty low, it doesn't even get warm. I had a probe attached to the heatsink for a while to keep an eye on it, and it basically hung at ambient temp.

Just wanted to say.... Thanks for this thread.

I recently upgraded my SRT8 to the kicker speakers and amp all around, (except the Sub).
When I saw your thread, I noticed I had the exact same amp, and a JL13TW5 subwoofer from my old truck.

So I bought the same crossover, followed your setup, and I am HAPPY AS HELL with
the massive pounding bass that I was missing.

How did you wire up your lc2i? Some say you need to run +12v from the battery, others say you can run it off of the amp's power. Also did you wire your remote turn on to/from the lc2i or did you just let it's GTO do that? Thanks for your help!

I just tapped it off the power lead to the amp. I can't see any good reason to run two separate wires to the back if they're just going to be tied together at the battery anyway.

I had the turn on lead running from the lc2i to the amp. In theory, the lc2i should detect when the radio is on and then turn on itself and the amp. In practice, I found the lc2i was staying on for a long time after I shut the radio off. So, I set the amp to automatically turn on when it detects a signal. The lc2i still stays on for too long sometimes, but at least the amp doesn't.
