Possessed 2008 Liberty: Honking and Squirting at will!

I have a possessed 2008 Liberty. In mid-April 2012, I was pulling into a parking spot and it just went crazy! The horn was honking, the windshield wipers and fluid kept going on and off, and the door locks kept going up and down. This lasted for 15 minutes! I took it to a Chrysler garage the next day. They kept it for the better part of 4 days and charged me $109 just to tell me that they have no idea what is causing it. They said that it could need a software update, the battery could be the problem (but itís charging at 60%), and handful of other ideas.

The problem came back the very next day. It went away, and came back strong about 3 weeks later. I took it to the same garage. This time, they were sure that it needed a software upgrade. So, I paid $100 for the upgrade, and the problem is still there. The only thing that I can do is unhook one of the battery terminals, wait 5 minutes, and cross my fingers.

I should probably point out that I had an aftermarket Viper alarm and remote start installed in 2009. I really donít think that is the problem.

Any ideas?

Go to another dealership. See if a new dealership can't solve the problem.

Electrical problems is very hard to fix, it seems like you have the ghost of Chrysler at the fullest extent.

I would love to see this going on, on video.

Worthy of note, I had this Liberty in the garage for a different issue in November of 2011. The issue was that it seemed as if the battery was dead when I turned the ignition, but it wasn't the problem at all. The problem was between the dash receiver and the key chip. I hear that it was happening to a lot of people, but it wasn't enough to force a recall.

I don't know if these issues are connected or not!

Ha!! I've thought about that AFTER it happens, but I'm only concerned about getting it to shut-up so that my neighbors quit yelling.

Should get a custom license plate with the name Christine on it!

I think you might have a pinched wire in the steering column. Or along a door hinge.

Make sure to take video of it next time to show to the dealer.

because the wiper washers and the horn going off, to me it really sounds like your TIPM is failing... The TIPM is a common failure causing intermittant wipers (what i see mostly) but all of these are controlled by the TIPM. I mention the washers and the horn because things like the wipers and headlamps can come on with a communication failure, a "safe mode" of sorts, the car would rather run the wipers and headlights mid day in 100 degree temps than fail at midnight in a downpour and not have headlamps or wipers... You may have a couple issues, but it really sounds like a tipm giving up the ghost.

I did! The tow truck driver had the opportunity to witness it, as well. The dealership said, "If it doesn't happen here, we can't help you". Even if I let the battery drain and a rollback takes it in, they'll still be unable to get the get the error codes because they claim that those codes get lost when they recharge the battery or rehook the battery terminal (as I've been doing).

Thank you! I'll bring this TIPM issue up to them next week.

I took it into Best Buy to update the crossover unit and check the wires. They said: "if you unhook these three connections from the crossover unit and it still happens, it clearly isn't the Viper security/ remote start system causing the problem". It happened the other day and I unhooked the crossover unit... but that didn't help.

Interestingly enough, the problem persisted for another 15 minutes and it magically stopped when the "oil change" reminder came on. Does this reinforce any opinions?

This ... I had a customre with a jk...had a tipm on order for almost a month prior to it coming i last year. her wipers wouldnt stop going. we finally just got a used one put it in the car so she could drive it until the new one came in. I would put a better part there is either corrosion in there or its shorted inernally....

Re: Possessed 2008 Liberty: Honking and Squirting at will!

Well, I called the garage and told them that I'll be bringing it in again. I just noticed today that my horn is blown, and I suppose that this is a direct result of the horn honking so damn much. The guy at the garage said "Nahhh, it can't be the TIPM".

That reminds me... I found this on another Jeep forum. I didn't write it, but does it remind you of anyone? http://www.wranglerforum.com/f33/sho...pm-131319.html
