V6 or V8?

Hey all, I am new to the forum and am seriously considering upgrading from my 07 Xterra to a Grand Cherokee. My big question is whether to go with the 8 or the 6. Will drive about 15000 miles a year mostly highway (lots of traffic, live in Boston) and do some light off-roading. I've read all the reviews but for those who have put some mileage on your vehicles what do you think? Is hemi power totally subdued by the not-so-awesome transmission? Is the v6 mileage that much better? Those with 6 wish they went with the 8 or vice versa? Thanks in advance!

My 2 cents. I had the 2011 with a v6. The v6 was adequate. I traded it in a few months ago for a 2012. I opted for the v8. The v8 provides nice smooth power for offroading. If you're concerned about gas mileage, get the v6. If you have the finances, the v8 will not disappoint you. Either way, you'll love the new GC. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask.

Thanks toddo! That's what I was thinking. Test drove a V8 tonight and the power felt smooth and the hemi rumble was subtle but nice. Now I just have to convince my wife that the V8 is the way to go!

Re: V6 or V8?

I bought a '12 with the V6 in December. I traded it for the another '12 in April for the V8. I have 50/50 highway city driving, my mpg was 19.7 to now 16.4.

The V6 was nice, quiet and smooth engine. It just had lulls in stop and go traffic and the torque of the V8 pulls through those situations.

That was why I changed, and I never considered the V8 to start with.

Sorry, have to speak up for the V6. No regrets at about 38,000 miles.

But its your choice.

Thanks Cherodude...I appreciate the feedback. After doing a bunch of other research on the forum along the same topics it seems like I can't really go wrong either way.

I think if the diesel were on the table my mind would be made up!

I have the V8 and like it. I don't think I'd be happy with the V6. As for the Diesel, a Ram truck with a diesel engine pulled up at the gas station I was at, on the pump opposite me. He left it running and it was LOUD, obnoxiously loud, in park. And the dummy filled up with gas with it running.

I've noticed a lot of people leave their diesels running while they're out of the vehicle. Are they that hard to start, or is it an ego thing?

They can definitely be loud, but they can also be pretty quiet and "refined". About a year or so ago I was taking a walk and a newer diesel A6 pulled up next to me. I could tell right away it was a diesel, but not in a bad way. It wasn't loud or obnoxious, but rather a nice subdued "pur".

A couple months ago a newer diesel Jeep (either a Patriot or Liberty, I forget which...) pulled up next to me and same thing. It may have been a little louder than I remember the Audi being (or maybe not, it's been so long) but it still definitely wasn't loud or obnoxious at all, like a lot of the trucks can be.

In larger engines, it's often more efficient to simply idle rather than start the engine again. On a diesel, it's especially true because the idle speed is so low. Most decent sized V8s this tends to work too. I'm not sure at what point in engine size and idle time it stops being more efficient, but it would appear to be solved in smaller engines, as overseas there's a lot of engines that stop running when you reach a stoplight and then start back up automatically. That seems to be found mostly on little engines.
