Stupid Fan Relay

So I'm pretty sure my fan relay just went. I drove to my soccer game about 20 mins away and when I got there, turned off the Jeep, and started to walk away I heard a whirring. I leaned down and it was coming from the front. Popped the hood and looked at the electric fan and it was just sitting there doing its thing. I banged on it, turned the car on and off a couple times but nothing caused it to stop. I disconnected it (figuring it would give me a dead battery if I let it keep going). Now it won't come on.

I read that everyone recommends going with a Mopar relay and replacing the fan at the same time. I should do both just for the Jeeps sake (just passed 133,000).

Any have good recommendations for sites? As well, is it possible to buy a brand new relay and steal a fan out of another WJ without issues? I have about 15 junkyards within 30 minutes of me that have tons of WJs.

Re: Stupid Fan Relay

I would get a new fan if I were you, just replaced mine almost a month ago. The stock one finally decided to break off from it's housing. Fan relay was replaced 2 years ago and still working fine. Not sure about the Mopar brand, but I bought relay and fan from advanced auto. Haven't had a problem yet.

You could get one from the junkyard, but not knowing how long it's going to last and without warranty bothers me. As long its not electrical or mechanical, I'm good with it.

15 junkyards around you? Damn.... Wish I had ONE in my area, I think it's time to move back to Cali.

Re: Stupid Fan Relay

I replaced my fan about a year ago when the electric fan decided to become Flubber against my radiator and main fan . SO I hope that the fan is still good but the relay just went bad.

I'll go to our new Autozone in my neighborhood, be their first customer, and check their pricing. I saw the Mopar for $74.99 somewhere I believe. What did your relay and fan run you if you don't mind me asking?

I was at a junkyard earlier this week and there was a 2000 4.0 I6 (exact model just different color of mine) with 28,000 miles on it that had been totaled in a T-bone accident in 2008. Engine compartment had not been touched and still looked pretty new (minus the dust/dirt). Guy said he would sell me the fan for $25 if I took it off myself.

probably 15. For sure at least 10. When you leave 30 minutes from Mexico and 30 minutes from the most dangerous road in Southern California, there tends to be a lot of junkyards.

Re: Stupid Fan Relay

lookie what I found. Does anyone know how to tell if my car ever went in? Besides going to the dealer and directly asking? If the Jeep didn't go in, do you think I have a shot of getting a refund (I spent $900 getting this fixed last year) if I have proof of receipt or getting this done now? I do qualify, Jeep was built in March 2000.

who did the work? if a jeep dealer than yes cuz they charged you for a part that was under a recall, if not a jeep dealer im gonna say youre SOL. But hey it dosent cost anything for a phone call, give them youre vin # and ask if its covered by the recall.
of course there mAy be a time constraint on the recall so u may get screwed there too,id guess that getting 900 bucks back is right up there with winning the lottery. G/L let us know what they say

third party did the work but I can also play like it never got fixed possibly. The original fan was replaced with a fan from the same model. Not the smartest thing to do but I was tight on money.

I'm going to the stealership tomorrow:fighting:. I live 2 miles away from it and face to face is the way to go when it comes to disputes (I know this from life )

Hereeeeee comes the little guy!

Re: Stupid Fan Relay

cost me $150 for the new fan and motor and $50 on relay....
was bidding on the same one on ebay selling for half the price when my fan broke...
had to pay extra for convenience....

Re: Stupid Fan Relay

So I went in this morning. Told them that I found out there was a recall in 2006 for my Jeep and just wanted to know if the Jeep ever went in. Dude ran my VIN number and came back saying that the recall was still outstanding :D and I would need to have it replaced now. I asked him if they could replace the relay and he said it would be $30.

So for $30, I got the electric fan replaced and a new relay. I also told him about how it broke last year and cost me $900 (for exactly what was recalled) and he said it was too far back to do anything but if I had come in right away when it happened, he might have been able to do something.

Overall, I'm pleased. I wasn't expecting to get anything out of it except heartbreak but ended up getting it fixed!
