Im going to be putting on a muffler(Flowmaster 40) next week. And i was wondering if in order to the see the tip of the muffler behind the jeep if you needed to buy a seperate tip which makes the end longer so it sticks out more? Or does putting a new muffler on underneath make it longer so you can see it? Or do i need to buy a seperate chrome "tip" that will make it longer so its easy to see behind the car?
First off, what you think is the "muffler" might be the resonator. The muffler is actually under the vehicle (under front passenger) and what you see in the rear with the tip coming out of it is a resonator. If you are replacing the muffler with the FM, you will then have to decide to 1) eliminate the resonator and then position the tip wherever you like or 2) add a tip to the resonator. Option 1 is going to create what is called "drone" in the cabin of the Jeep which will make it very difficult to hear inside the vehicle; thus it is not recommended to remove the resonator. Some people have replaced the resonator with something else like a smaller muffler - then you can install whatever tip you want on it.
When you buy a catback system, it will include the muffler, new resonator, and the tip.
Hope this helps.
