new to forum, "old" to jeeps

hi all, first post here. I've owned jeeps for the past 15 years - started with a wrangler, then a cherokee 4.0 (bought new in 2000, had it til 2012 when a semi ran me off the road & totalled it - :( ), now a liberty. Of all of my jeeps, the liberty is my least favorite. I did want a GC at the time, but wasn't happy with the 3.7 in that vehicle.

Long story short, I'm becoming less & less happy with the liberty & am ready to make the move. The diesel GC looks essentially PERFECT for me on paper, but I've never owned a diesel of any sort before. Is there anything to consider before making the move from a gas vehicle to a diesel?

thanks in advance for the help!

hi,picked up my new diesel laredo a week ago,and i can promise you it is absolutely fantastic!,it is also my first diesel engine,it has great performance with loads of low down torque and shoots up to 150kmh( wants to keep going) for quick overtaking, keeps surprising me every time i drive it,cruising down on the highway you can hardly hear the engine, before i bought test drove a 3.6 petrol and the diesel, the diesel far more superior in every way,so much more response especially from get up and go,cannot say enough about this car, hope this helps bye from the land down under(australia)

What you need to be prepared for is:
More power than a Hemi
Better fuel economy than a Pentastar
Longer range (over 600mi/1000km) from a tank
Being able to tune it, unlike the petrol models.
Putting diesel into the tank.

My Jeep is our first Diesel and I have not had any problem aside from the greasy handles at the fuel stations when filling it up.

Hi jerkylips,

My GC is the first diesel I have owned. It is a different experience as the acceleration and push in the seat you get, isnt accompanied with the sound of a gas engine spinning out to the redline. Very quiet, very quick, very economical.

I love it!

thanks for all the replies. You guys have pretty much confirmed what I was thinking. One other question, though - I looked at a review of the Mercedes with this engine & there was a reference to a urea tank that needs to be refilled every 10-15k miles. Is that the same with jeep as well?

The export version of the WK2 does not require urea. However, it is not yet publically known if the US version will.

HOWEVER, the Mercedes does NOT use this engine. Mercedes have their own diesel engine. The diesel engine used in the WK2 is an all-new engine from VM Motori: http://www.vmmotori.it/en/01/00/00/index.jsp

thanks for the clarification - I was under the impression it was the same engine.

No, the first generation WK/WH used a Mercedes diesel in export markets. The new WK2's diesel is cleaner and more efficient than the old Mercedes one.

Does anyone have serious miles done with the VM engines?
I had the Benz diesel in a sprinter and it has been known to last.

Im interested to know if anyone crossed the 100,000 miles range with ANY VM powered jeep and how was the reliability

I doubt there would be any or many as the motor has only been available for just on a year. Mine has done 15,000km or 8,000mi and has been faltless.
