Bike Rack

So I plan on buying a mountain bike really soon and I would like to get a rack with it. Does any one have pics of their roof racks for bikes? Is it hard to get the bike on the roof? Thanks

Here's the ones I have. They are the Thule 518 Echelons. They needed an adapter that goes on top of your existing roof rails. I love them! The bikes are easy to get up there thanks to the rear tire and rear door placement being so close. I just put one foot on the rear door sill, and my other on the tire. The jeeps a bit tall for me to do it from the ground. I love that I can lock the front forks on the racks so no one can steal the bikes, unlike those hitch mounted ones. Only problem with roof racks is remembering the bikes are up there. If you hit a good size tree branch, it could cause damage not only to your bike but to your roof rails as well. I always keep a sticky note pad in the center console so I can write myself a note to remember they're up there lol.

I don't think I have any pics of my bike on my rack, but I have 2 Swagman fork mount racks on my Jeep, with an Inno fairing. They work awesome and its not hard at all to get the bikes up on top.

How about with a 2" lift and 31.5" tires? hehe

I use a hitch mounted carrier on mine. Works perfect!

Hitch for mine also. It's on all the time too. I have to keep the backup sensors off, but at least if someone rear ends me they hit the rack first. It's pretty convenient to just throw the bike on there without taking a wheel off.

Here's my system:

It will be damn near impossible once I lift the jeep I'm afraid. It's certainly not as easy as a rear hitch mounted carrier but I think those are lame! I like having my bikes up above the car anyway. I have rocky mounts bike trays and a yakima system including their load warrior basket. I use it at least once a month, too.

I ride 2-3x a week and I've gotten the system down to a science. I just pick the bike up and throw it up into the tray and then jump on the tire to tighten things up.

OK so based on your review/pic, I ended up picking up a swagman rack. The problem is, the rack extends too far, and when I lift the tailgate, the tailgate bends the end of the rack up (and it will stay that way until I bend it back into place). Maybe my bike just has a long wheelbase? Or do you also run into this problem?

I didn't have this problem with mine. Maybe you need to slide the roof rack crossbars forward? That will slide the bike rack forward as well.

Yeah I thought about that (and I might have one slot forward to move it at best) but just ended up taking it off for the time being since I'm going on a couple of road trips in the next couple of weeks anyways and it would just be extra drag.

Yea I lost a bit of mpg with my 2 and the fairing, but I don't ever take them off. I didn't buy a jeep for gas mileage lol. I would try moving them forward and see if that takes care of it
