Engine Fails To Start

Just wondered if anyone has experienced this and if so could possibly explain the cause. I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland with 1000 miles on it. I have on two occasions now had the engine fail to start when cranking and toward the end of the 10 second crank cycle, the Red Electronic Throttle Control warning light comes on. If I wait a second or two and try it again it starts. The first time I thought it may have been because the drivers door was open but I think that is only on remote starting. Sounds like a service visit is needed to sort this out.

any failed key message?? also are you using the push button start or turn key style, last 8 of vin and miles and i can check for any star cases from chrysler

Re: Engine Fails To Start

I am using the push button function and no, I don't recall seeing a failed key message however that is a good point as I have noticed that the system is very sensitive to where I carry the key. Seems best if it is in my righthand pocket so the sensor must be near the center stack.

VIN last 8 CC-288702

Thanks for your feedback.

If it was a failed key it would not crank at all.

just checked for any cases none found no rrt's or any bulletins and damn you put some miles on that thing in 3 months, have your local dealer check for any stored dtc's this should not be happening

Hey nick45,

I have experienced a similar issue.
The engine fails to start and when it starts cranking I stop it and cycle the ignition on-and-off and it runs normally.

No error messages or lights.
And the dealer could not find any error logs.

Rafael, thanks for the note, it does sound like the same issue and dissapointing that the dealer can't find an error code.
Will wait to hear what Hammer1234's feedback is although his problem sounds a little different in that it involved a stall and mine is just cranking without a start. It sounds like it is not getting and electric feed.

Our problem was supposedly two bad keys...so we now have two new key fobs. Will have to see if we have any more issues.

Re: Engine Fails To Start

I had a crank-but-no-start issue. The car was low on gas, and I thought it might be a bad reading on the gauge. Just out of curiosity, I opened the gas cap. That released the vacuum that had built up. Pushed the button and it started right up.
