2012 WK2 Stereo Overhaul

I have had my 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee for about for about 7 months now and it still has the base model stereo in it. I have always installed my own systems, and like them clean and loud, and this one does not cut it:

After pulling the system out of my old Montero Sport, I realized that most of the equipment wasn't going to fit well into the Jeep. Luckily I have a '67 Camaro that never had a stereo in it, so i just got done wiring and installing a bunch of equipment along with fabricating a removable sub box with 2 12" subs.

Enough about the Camaro, I was ready to tackle the Jeep. I had done all my research, and was about to start ordering equipment when tragedy struck on the softball field. In a collision at home plate, I ruptured my left biceps tendon and had to have surgery last Friday to reattach it. With 3-6 months of rehab in my future, and in a splint for 6-8 wks, I decided to let the pro's handle this install.

The actual install won't be done for a few weeks. I just set up the appointment, and had to special order some parts, but I thought it would be good to start a thread, especially since I have some down time right now. These pics are all just file photos to wet the appetite.

I will be re-using my head unit. Even though its a few years old, it is a really nice piece. The head unit is a Kenwood DNX5120. It has Garmin Navigation, as well as a Sirius satellite radio. We will be using a PAC unit to tie it into the existing wiring, and keep the steering wheel controls:

I'll be using an Alpine PDX-V9 (http://www.alpine-usa.com/product/view/pdx-v9/Specs) to run the system. This puts out 100w RMS x 4 channels and 500w RMS to the Subwoofer:

Controls and hookups:

We'll be supplying power with a 4 awg wiring kit.

I wasn't sure what I was going to do for speakers. I have had Infinity Reference (so-so) and Infinity Kappas (good), in the past, but felt they lacked some mid bass. I just installed some Alpine Type R's in the Camaro, and they are decent, but they didn't blow me away.

After listening to some Focal's today, it was an easy decision. A little more expensive, but the sound was superb. I'll be using Focal IC 165 6 1/2" coaxials in the rear:

And Focal IS 165 6 1/2" components (separates) in the front:

I ordered a JL Audio Stealthbox to handle the bass. These things can handle 500w RMS, so they are a perfect match for the PDX-V9:

Here's what it should look like installed:

I'll also be using an Alpine RUX-Knob to be able to adjust the subwoofer volume independent of the radio controls. We'll find a handy place to mount this up front without being too obvious:

Awesome!

I also went through a complete overhaul of my Laredo's audio setup. It's a lot of work, but very rewarding.

I must ask, about the Kenwood headunit, did you try it out? I checked out a similar Kenwood while doing research on what to buy and I found the user interface response to be very lagy. I recommend trying it out in a store before you buy it.

According to crutchfield.com the Focal IS 165 won't fit in the front doors. They are actually 6 3/4" in size and thus won't fit. You can give them a try, you'll need a 5 1/4 / 6 1/2 to 6x9 adapter either way.

I highly recommend you use crutchfield.com OutfitMyCar tool to see what speakers fit in the WK2.

Good luck!

Cool, thanks for the input. I already have the Kenwood from my last SUV, so it's free. If it doesn't work, I'll decide from there.

This is the first car where I'm not doing the work myself (due to an injury). The shop I'm using wasn't concerned about the fit of the speakers. If the 6.5's don't fit up front, that's their problem, and we can find an alternative.

Either way, I'll update the thread with details. BTW I have used Crutchfield a bunch of times in the past and they aren't always right. Sometimes it's as simple as shaving an 1/8" off a bracket to make it fit.

Was going to do the same for my Jeep but with all of her issues I am waiting for bit.

I am a big fan of JL Audio. I like Alpine equipment ( spekers meh )and Focal speakers are top dog too. Had a pair of Focal 10"s for punch against 2 15"s in a band pass box. totally rocked and never peaked.

That being said in your configuration with 5 channels I think the 10" inch JBL will work great for the total sound. I would be curious though to see how fast you/we would outgrow a 10" being used for bass/sub bass. Although the JBL will work its ass of for you and make you grin, I have a feeling that at some point the 10" inch might be just a tad short of expectations. I have the 12 3w3 in a band pass box collecting dust for 6 months now that rocked! If you ever pass through NY and wanted to try out it would be fun to see the difference between the 10 and the 12.

If a 10 was all I could get I think I would wind up having a fab or something done for the other side of the Jeep and run 2 tens.

But thats armchair quarterbacking right now for me.

You def will be happy with your set up though. Stereos are like cars and motorcycles, you always want faster and better. lol

Looking forward to following your overhaul. Have you decided where you are going to put the RUX knob?

I totally agree. I had two 12" Infinity's in my last SUV and just installed them in the '67 powered by an Alpine MRD-M1005 (700wx1, 1000wx2). So it will be interesting to see if one 10 is sufficient. We can always do a custom box on the opposite wheel well if I need it.

Not 100% sure, we are tossing around some ideas. I want it to be fairly stealth but it needs to be easily accessible as well.

OK. I am kicking around a few ideas for mine as well. If you haven't done it by the middle of next week, I will let you know where I install mine and how well it works out.
