Oil Catch Can pics and Questions

Hello everyone. Most on here have heard at one time or another that i have been getting a 392 stroker (6.4L) put into my 06 Limited. Well after about 4 months of waiting she is scheduled to come home tomorrow Dec 4th assuming no further delays. I purchased an oil catch can off ebay as they all seemed pretty much the same. I figured the engine is modified enough to justify installing one and if nothing else it's going to be brand new inside and i want to prevent the build up of oily sludge. After taking this one apart im wondering if the more expensive cans are better? The tube in and tube out are right next to each other and are the same depth into the can. I understand that oil is heavier than the air, but can i really expect a significant amount of oil vapor to collect in this can rather than being sucked right into the exit tube and still ending up in my intake? I've seen a few that appear to have a steel wool like substance in them which seems logical to me. Gives the oil something to grab onto as the air passes through it. I guess i'll just install this one and see if i get a build up over time, i think it was like $35 shipped so not too much of a waste if in the future i need to get a better one.

Looks like there's a few metal shavings in mine, def going to wipe this thing out before installing!

Haha it's my work pc, so i didnt pick it. :)

The catch can was on ebay, they had red and blue as well. I actually wanted black as i really didnt want it to stick out that much but im happy with the brushed aluminum color now that i see it in person.

Here's the seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Unive...item2c51fdf892

Yea i asked if they started it yesterday and they said they were waiting on a new intake manifold which should have arrived this morning. They work 10am-7pm, so i think i'm going to call now and see how things are going. I remember thinking i'd get it back by end of September, then October, then November.... I just hope it's still done by tomorrow, dont want my hopes to get crushed again!

Yea i dont really see how it's going to be exttemely effective. Having some type of material for the oil to cling to when the air goes through would make more sense to me. I guess i'll try it out and see how it goes. I'd guess after about a month there will be enough to show on that little side tube

Man.... I just called. My contact was tied up on the dyno at the moment. Guy on the phone said they've been working on it but he didnt know when it was going to be done and i'd have to get that info from my guy. Going to send him an email and he's supposed to email me tonight or call me in the morning. Keeping my fingers crossed!

At least it's close to being done. Don't piss them off and have them throw the rest together. lol

I know what it's like to be in that position and it sucks. But you'll have it back in your possession soon. Like I said before I can't wait to hear your feedback.

You've described my position perfectly! Everyone at work is all "sue their ass!" "i'd be calling cussing them out!" etc.... But yea the worst thing that could happen is i wait 4months and end up with something thrown together. I've tried to be stern and factual with my emails to them and just tried to emphasize that im not trying to make this personal, but as a fellow car guy being without my daily driver for 120 days + when originally quoted up to 45 days, im starting to get frustrated. I just try to get them to acknowledge how they'd feel in my shoes. I guess we'll see. Dealership would have thrown in a rebuilt 5.7 in 5 days with a 3 year warranty. This stroker will certainly be a more powerful engine at the expense of time and potentially reliability. I sure hope it's worth it. I've been pretty patient now at 3x's the estimated duration, but you're right. Whats a few more days at this point if it ensures they get it right.

My guy there did email me back and said they have a few guys staying late tonight and told me to give them a call in the morning. They are going to drain out the 4month old 87octane and put in some 93 to help them tune with the higher compression tomorrow. Its a good workout on my patience. Combine being without your daily driver for 4 months with the added excitement of a lot of new power and you can imagine how im feeling! I sold my nitrous breathing 600hp CTS-V 2 months ago with the thought that my WK would be done within a week or two after selling it. Now i've been fortunate to be borrowing a car from co worker for 2 months now, but that Suzuki Esteem with rollup windows, missing hub caps, and a cracked windshield is getting old! Dont get me wrong i defintely appreciate having anything to drive at this point, but i would have held off on selling the caddy had i known it was going to take this long!

Re: Oil Catch Can pics and Questions

I just talked to the shop for about 30 mins. Long story short it wont be done today, but at least he told me first thing today. The compression was to be 10.5:1, but he now feels it's more like 10.7:1 or maybe even as high as 11:1. Well our wimpy stock starter cant handle turning the compression apparently. The starter was only about a month old before this happened, and although it did get wet it was only for a few seconds. He said they turned the engine for a bit without the spark plugs to get the oil in there and it turned fine, but once the plugs were in it just clicked. They have a stronger starter on the way and are hoping it arrives today. Worst case we're looking at Monday/Tuesday i guess, but at least i'll have a better starter ;)
