Leaking fluid from front axle differential
Hi, i'm new to this and I hope someone out there has an answer for me. There is oil/fluid leaking from what I can see is the front axel/differential. Can anyone tell me if this is a seal problem or am i looking at somthing bigger. also I was thinking of switching it from a 4x4 to a 2x4 to not have to tear it down is this possible? thanks for any help. It is a 1999 jeep grand cherokee. I'm trying to get as much use until i buy another one.

Re: Leaking fluid from front axle differential
Leaking fluid from the front axle is most probably coming from the diff seals. To change the seals in there you have to remove the diff from the housing. I have never done this, but the service manual mentiones a tool which stretches the housing a bit. Not sure if it can be done without this tool.
Switching from 4x4 to 4x2 will not help a lot, there should still be fluid in the diff to lubricate the parts.
