1997 not wanting to stay running
Hi guys, I am new to this forum and am on my first Jeep. it is a 1997 Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.2l v8. I love the car but........ I am having my first problem with it.

So the battery was dying after sitting for a few days. when i would jump it, it would fire right up and things would be good. Them just recently the battery died again. so I i tried to jump it and it would fire up but it wouldn't stay running. I tried it again and this time i put my foot on the gas and held it at 1500 rpm for a bit then let out and.... died again. I put a new battery in it and it fired right up but guess what...... died again. I read online that it was maybe my alternator so i took it off and took it to my local auto parts to get it checked.....but they ran it twice and it was good. I for sure need a new battery but I have no idea what could be causing this. I was hoping someone here maybe experienced this problem before and could help me out. I know I should take it in but I am a little strapped for cash right now so I am hoping one of you can help me out with some trouble shooting.
Thanks in advance for your time and help.

Re: 1997 not wanting to stay running
you may need to just let it run with the throttle... I know its pretty common on the 4.7 wj, if the battery is COMPLETELY drained it can take keeping the engine running with the throttle for a while to relearn its idle.

If 2005's recommendation doesn't work put a meter on the battery before it's started, and while it's running to see if the alternator is working when it's on the truck.

What does volt gauge read while running? and dont always trust parts house there equipment could be off. A good alternator should charge at least 12v with truck running. Battery could also have a bad cell and be discharging to quickly and alternator would not be able to keep up.
