Gear 6

Found out something last week.

While driving around, I selected 5th gear by moving gear selector, one click left, to slow a little, and then one click to the right again.

Instead of returning to 'D' it select 6th gear, and leaving it there, it didn't show the 'ECO' symbal and I couldn't hear the MDS cutting in at all, but didn't seam to effect my MPL figures much at all.

Stoping at lights and taking off again, it stayed in that mode untill I switched off.

I also tried it in 'Sport', and it was the same.

Is this similar to 'Tow Mode'??

Re: Gear 6

What is your build date? When starting at highway speeds in D, the 2012 should shift to 6th with one tap left (which disengages MDS but nothing else. It may also temporarily disengage the torque converter lock up). A second tap left brings you to 5th. When in 5th a right tap brings you back to 6th and another tap to D.

Unless something has changed, perhaps you either tapped twice by accident or you have a faulty switch. Does this happen every time? You should at least be able to keep taping right until D is displayed without shutting off the car to reset.

I don't think transmission programing is different for "export" models.

Re: Gear 6

Coldcase, when tapping the autostick left it goes to the gear it's currently in. His speed when he tapped left wasn't high enough for him to be in 6th gear, his WK2 was using 5th gear at the time he tapped left.

Re: Gear 6

Good point, thanks for clarifying. When I mentioned highway speed, I was meaning the gearbox was already in 6th (second overdrive), which may not be the case with the OP observation.

Tapping left will indicate the current gear and on acceleration the transmission will hold it in that gear until engine red line, otherwise it works just like an auto. What you see displayed may not be the actual gear in use. You cannot directly select a gear manually and hold it there, all you can do is set the max gear (until the tranny automatically shifts at red line).

I think if he kept tapping right, it would sequence through the gears and eventually indicate D regardless.

It does go to 'D' if I tap again, and it always goes to 5 on first tap, regardless of speed.

Do your RPMs drop when you shift from 5 to D?

I'll have to check today.

Thats the way the USA 2011s worked, but you did say in the first post that you see a 6 displayed in the EVIC sometimes, right?

If you have 2012 USA software and are traveling say 60mph (whatever that is in kpm) and tap left you should see 6 in the EVIC. The rpms may change temporarily due to torque converter lock operation, there will not be a gear change.

For 2011 USA software, taping left under the same condition will downshift from OD 2 to OD 1 and you will see a 5 in the EVIC. There is some difference between early and late 2011 programing, but not in this area.

So when you tap left from D on the highway, do you see roughly a 200 rpm increase in rpm and then shortly thereafter a return to the original rpm?

I dunno if there is something unique in export models transmission programing, you will have to wait for someone else to chime in.
