strange noise from the rear!
Hi! first post here. I have a 2000 GC, quadra-drive. well apart from the ususal gear-whining from the differentials I have another strange noise, sounds as if it coming from the rear, right wheel or something, its only noticable when driving on small country roads with pebbles, gravel, etc and ofcourse when off-road.
My mechanic cant find any fault. Im beginning to think its a lose absorber or the exhaust pipe banging against something?
anybody with similar noises?

thanks beforehand

Re: strange noise from the rear!
Welcome to the garage.
The original shock absorber bolts are known to be a bit too small and can cause some rattling. There are some write-ups about which bolt to use.
The aft exhaust pipe rubber mounting on my Jeep makes some funny noises, some silicone spray on it helps for some time, until water has washed all away and it starts again.
Also have a look at the upper control arm bushings (fwd ones) and the aft ball joint, which can get some play and cause some noises.

Re: strange noise from the rear!
My Jeep has been making a thumping noise when going over bumps. I went through troubleshooting all the shock bolts, sway bar bushings, control arms, etc. None of it was causing the problem.

Eventually I found out that if I pull the ebrake 2 clicks, the noise goes away. I haven't had the time to pull apart the brakes to find out exactly what it is.
