Heater core problems, perhaps...?

Hello

I have a 2000 WJ limited, 4.7 v8
I've had it for about 3 years now, the AC has never worked. Had problems with the passengers side heat, replaced blend doors and good as new.
However, there's been a constant smell of coolant coming from the vents. Windows will not defrost, and I'd say about 90% of the time there's a white "smoke" coming from the vents, even when the heat is not on. I've been thinking it's the heater core, but I've never seen any coolant leak on the passenger's side as I've read is typical with this kind of thing. Haven't noticed any obvious coolant leaks underneath the jeep either. Every once in a while I'll get a "coolant low" light on and I'll have to fill it, but it takes a while before the next time. This has been going on for a long time now. Anybody have any insight?

Have a good look under the passengers side carpet, if its not wet overthere, because its not always leaking on top of it.

Had the EXACT same issue with my 2000 Grd. Cherokee Ltd.. First the smell of coolant, then vapor coming out of vents, fogging of windshield, finally coolant seeping and saturating passenger side floorboard. It was a leaking heater core: I replaced the core and blend door assembly at the same time. It was a lengthy and challenging repair, but worth the savings considering the lowest quote I received was around $2200. For reference I used the Chilton manual and instructions printed off of the WJJeeps.com site. Best of luck!

Good to have some confirmation. I get nervous that it might turn out to be something different and then the ordeal of removing the dash would be unnecessary. We avoided it with the blend doors by going in through the glove compartment, but I guess we'll just have to dive in. Thanks! Now I'll go have a much closer look at the passengers side floor..

Did a more thorough inspection and found a leak on the passengers side. Pulled back the carpet near the top of the footwell and sure enough there was coolant. Thanks for that suggestion
