What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity

...planning on going to Uwharrie out here in good 'ol north carolina. Supposed to be fun with plenty of beginner / moderate trails.

I plan on sticking to the easy stuff as from an off road perspective I'm totally stock on my 3.7 QD1:( . I have sway bars but from what I've heard as long as I'm not expecting my wheel travel I should be ok to leave them on.

What should I know in advance?

Also, how crowded are these legal trails usually? Are we going to be in a big caravan? i.e. am i going to be embarrassed to be the new guy going super slow in a stock truck?

1st lower your air pressure all around by 5-10 lb..
2nd Some people I know think it's a race it's not take your time.
3rd Watch what the others are doing it will give you an idea what route to take if they have a similar truck.
4th Watch out going in water too deep this is one of my own problems. I love when the water is flying around me, and I'm gonna lock this thing up if I'm not more careful.
5th don't worry about being embarrassed so far this Wk has impressed me.
6th Also listen to the others on here that have had there trucks before I did these folks are good.
7th Have fun

Mine doesnt have recovery points on the front yet I do carry straps, and a hook I built for the hitch all the time.

" What do I need to know before I lose my off roading virginity"....use protection BwAh Hah hAh!!!, but seriously use your tiptronic, manumatic, whatever type of the shift on the fly trnasmissions in the WKs are called. On the trail you are rarely going to be doing more than 30MPH. Therefore stay in 2nd or 3RD gear for better throttle respnose at low speeds and going down hills the lower gears will slow the Jeep thus saving your brakes. Just be sure to not shift down to 1ST gear unless you are going no faster than around 15MPH. If you are at a stop or moving under 15MPH while in 1ST gear and the Jeep accelrates past 15MPH that is not usually issue. If you are doing 40MPH and you start shifting down to slow the WK and lose track what gear you are in and take down to 1ST gear, well the Jeep will make a series of odd noises.

Thanks for all the tips. Turns out I wusses out. Uwharrie isn't crazy here but it's got enough obstacles that I don't think I could safely clear them with stock lift and tires. I scraped the skid plates twice and decideded against going forward. Luckily it was only within the first few minutes I was able to make the call. I really didn't want to see myself teetering and stuck with no wheels on the ground!

I made the right decision right? I shouldn't be tearing up the skid plates right? That's not how to "do it" right?

AAAARRGGGGGGHHHHHH That sucks, but he who runs lives to fight another day. I don't know how Uwharrie is laid out, but you being on the skid plates doesn't sound great. You where there you felt your Jeep could be damaged, and I'm not going to second guess you. Get yourself a lift, tires, and some recovery points. Then go back, and conquer it.
BTW You're welcome

Yeah my gf was with me and she offered to take a picture for some guy in a sick wrangler with his kids then he offered us a map and highly advised we stay on the easy trails, "especially in that" as he pointed toward my jeep.

...probably one of the most emasculating Think I've ever had happen to me. But I think he was right..

Wether he was right, or not things can be said without putting someone down. Most Jeep guys I've run into have been really nice, and have taken a bit of time to answer my stupid questions. Some people mistakenly believe because they have a bigger truck, or bigger motor, more options , and etc., that other parts of their anatomy grew.

honestly the ground clearance even in a lifted (2", about 3.5" total with tires) wk is so crappy as compaired to most other "wheeling" rigs that i would not really suggest lowering the tire pressure unless you come across an obstical that would require it, from my own experience. i have alot of carnage under my rig that agrees.

from there the only real important thing is that your with at least one other rig, preferably someone who knows the area... trails in the pac nw can be relly tight with little to no turn around space and really really tight in some areas so backing up would be quite sketchy and longer trails so beiing with someone who know whays ahead helps, plus if the trail swallows your rig you have one to help you get your ride out or at the least you out. I did go up difficult trails in my rig but my rock rails took a HELL of a beating.
