Upgrading RES to RHR radio

Hi all,

I'm new here and new to Jeeps as well. I recently purchased a base model 2012 4x4 Laredo and I'm interested in upgrading the stereo system. I have the base 130 radio and plan to upgrade to the 730N RHR. The dealer tells me I can upgrade to the 430N RHB but not the 730N RHR. I disagree. I have spent about a week reading this forum and several others and believe I have most of the kinks worked out and would love it if somebody who is familiar with these systems can review my plan.

To start off, I do not have the UConnect HFM, USB ports, or anything more than an AM/FM antenna. Like I said, base model. I plan to purchase the same antenna and antenna cables that come with the 430N RHB upgrade kit as I believe they are the same ones used for the 730N RHR. I will be adding a microphone (same one as in the 430N RHB upgrade kit but with a different cable to go straight to the radio). I will also be adding steering wheel controls for UConnect as well as USB ports. Parts are as follows:

82212643 730N RHR Radio
82211743AB Microphone for A-pillar installation, direct-to-radio cable
05064861AD Antenna, base cable, & bracket (AM/FM + Satellite + GPS)
05091100AA Antenna mast (is this different from the AM/FM only mast?)
68023815AA Cable from Satellite/GPS antenna to radio
56046097AC UConnect steering wheel control switch
68068278AA USB cable from radio to center console

I still have a couple of unresolved issues. First, will simply replacing the steering wheel switch add the functionality I'm looking for? It's part of the EVIC switch and as I understand it the system should automatically recognize it and no additional cabling will be necessary. Will it need to be flashed/programmed? Second, I need to add USB ports to the center console. I cannot for the life of me find the part number I need. The USB ports in equipped vehicles go on the center console hinge cover. I have the non-USB piece called "WK Hinge Cover Molded WO USB" with P/N C01366009BL. I cannot find this part number anywhere nor can I find what I need to replace it with to get the USB ports. Can anybody help with this? Once that is installed I assume the cable from the radio just plugs into the back of the ports.

Does anybody see any compatibility problems here? Incorrect part numbers? I have not been able to find a single instance of someone going from base RES to RHR; people usually seem to start with the RES+RSC which has some of the UConnect features.

One other minor issue: I have found two antennas that seem to have the same description: 05064861AD and 05064771AC. I'm not sure what the difference is but the 4861AD seems to be what people are recommending. I am not going with the oft-mentioned 05064350AA because that is a GPS-only antenna (maybe it has satellite too? not sure, but definitely no AM/FM) and I don't want extra clutter in or on my car; I'll stick with the combined antenna on the roof.

Thanks in advance for your help!

talk with oemautparts on ebay. They will know everything you need to upgrade to the 730n. I just got a brand new 730n and all i needed was a jumper cable for the microphone to go from 430 to 730n

Their last sale was in January...they don't seem to be active any longer. http://myworld.ebay.com/oemautoparts/

Hey Scott,

Thanks for the info. It appears that they haven't sold anything since January and are no longer active...do I have the right people? Tried posting a response with a link to their page but it hasn't appeared yet.

Found a website with the same name and emailed them; hope they are the right people.

Also, I apparently am too new here to reply via instant message, so if I don't respond to you there that's why.

Does anybody know whether the 82211743AB mic is mounted behind the A-pillar, out of sight, or is it surface mounted? I assumed it was mounted behind, but upon reviewing the instructions it's not really clear. Which side is the adhesive on, front or back of the mic? I was planning on getting this because the mirror with integrated mic looks pretty clunky and I hate auto-dim.

Also, if any of you who have the center console USB ports are willing, could you pull the small panel with the USB ports (comes off very easily) and post the part number? I can find numbers for other parts of the console but not that hinge cover.

Thanks again!

Yep, those are the guys I found. I emailed them and their sales manager replied and it is clear that they didn't bother to read or understand my email (very similar to my post here)....asking me questions I already answered in my original email and giving me the iPod cable part number as the remote center console USB port. While I do appreciate the referral, I don't think they're going be a useful resource. Thanks anyway. :)

Re: Upgrading RES to RHR radio

I have a 2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo with the E package with the RES radio which includes bluetooth, mirror microphone, steering wheel controls and Uconnect. I would like to upgrade the radio in the easiest fashion possible to include navigation and a backup camera. Is there a plug and play radio I can to buy to easily accomplish this?
