Issue with Jeep WK2 Altitude roof rails

Hi there, i just purchased my second WK2, the altitude model (just released in Australia). I have now noticed that the roof rail is just a black mould and dosn't look like you could fit anything to it! This is not good as I m trying to add sturdy racks to hold a platform for sporting and camping gear.

Does anyone know how to solve this issue. I saw another thread of someone drilling in a whole new rail system (which I would be to worried to do) and looks to be very expensive.

I have checked out the rocky road system and thought it was my solution, however when I contacted them they said they could not confirm if their system would fit as they have not got a hold of an altitude yet.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Those rails are decorative, not functional.

They can be replaced with OEM rails, but it involves drilling out a couple threaded inserts and installing riv nuts, something the dealer should be able to do.

Thule has a foot that clamps to the roof instead of the rails. There is a thread around here somewhere with plenty of discussion, perhaps in the interior/exterior sub section.

Here is one:

this is absolutely driving me crazy - 2012 WK2 Altitude - I, like many others, purchased the cross bars OEM thinking I could just bolt these right up - come to find out the roof rails up there are just decorative. There needs to be a solution.

Re: Issue with Jeep WK2 Altitude roof rails

You just need to get longer bolts and screw the oem's down...but first you need to find a screw or use sealant to cover the bolt holes not used. You can get the oem side rails on justforjeeps.com Call 1888-651-jeep and talk with peter...tell him scott from jeepgarage sent you for a discount. I believe they also have the thule cross rails

The alternative is this package: Thule Removable Roof Rack Crossbars for Jeep Grand Cherokee - Item # TR486056 #TR486056

It hooks up to the door channels, which bypasses the need for the bright side rails. This is better than the Mopar cross bars because they have greater length and can also be positioned with greater distance between the bars. I haven't found the package for cheaper from anywhere else.

holy old thread!

I personally don't like cross bars that grip the door channels. The bright rails look so much nicer. Difference in width... sure you will have a wider setup with the Thule bars but it looks ridiculous to me. Just my 2 cents.

I am sure being in Australia, you mean Blackhawk

Have a look at the Blackhawk thread in the WK2 Export section and keep an eye on the info that Hutch081 is posting regards roof racks.

I had the same... paid for dealer to fit the proper roof rails on day 1... just shame they're not black ! Avoid anything that clings to sills...
