Ticking sound while idle

Hey Everyone,
I have a 2012 QT2, GC 5.7L Limited (no QL) with tow. Whenever I pull into a drivethru or have the Jeep idling I hear constant ticking (like the sound of mufflers/exhaust cooling down when parked). Initially I thought it was a metal expansion/contracting sound after start up but it happens even after an hour or so of driving. It is not the TSB click sound that advises the ESC clicks until it learns (I have 11000kms or 7000 miles on it now....so it should have learned by now). Not the fans, I have checked and there is no whine after the clicking noise. Any suggestions...?

Thanks Guys.

I should have been clearer. The sound is constant but ticks about once every couple of seconds, like a fan turning on/off (although I'm sure its not a fan). I would think lifters would tick with a lot more frequency than the sound I'm getting....?

Does this ticking change with engine RPM or vehicle speed? I just put a Corsa exhaust on my GC and the drivers side tunnel muffler appears to have a bad weld so I have an annoying tick from leaking exhaust (Corsa supposedly sending new muffler). Give it a try. Start vehicle and rev the engine slightly with door open in a closed in space (garage with door open, for example). If you hear the ticking pick up along with engine RPM you could have a leak.

Thanks MxRacer, no leak found. I'm wondering if my ESC is having trouble calibrating as its been over 50 cycles for it to learn the program....

I was about to suggest oil level and lifters but I just realized that was already covered. Could be a relay (or relays) and no cause for alarm?

This sounds like the same thing I was hearing. It is actually the transfer case. You will hear it if you drive with the windows open. Drive next to a building or some enclosed area at slow speeds, come to a stop, accelerate, etc. I though this was a major issue on top of some other problems I was having with transmission. I had the regional service rep out to the jeep dealer and he immediately knew what it was, said it was :normal operation" and is the transfer case doing its thing. I drove four other jeeps with him and heard it on all of them. I dont like it but appears to be normal operation. BTW I have a '12 V6 Overland. I hope this helps.

The more i hear it, the more it sounds like the ticking of the esc checking itself. I'll have to have the dealership listen (good luck with that...) and see if the calibration is having issues.

Scoob, my 2012 GC Overland V-6 does the exact same thing with the clicking but with whine also. Two questions: 1. Why did you mention the whine if yours doesn't do that and 2. Did you ever find out what the clicking is?

I'm not up to date in the new jeep engines, but if it has direct injection then it could be from that. Direct injection almost sounds diesel like at idle. Just a thought.

As I said I really know nothing about the new jeeps, this just came up on my latest threads section.

I just meant it wasn't the click of the electric fan and the whine would have been the noise of the fan. Never found out what it was but RobE's post makes sense.
