Altitude/srt headlight conversion?
 
I have a 2012 white Altitude, and I'm very happy with everything but would be happier with the projector headlights.:(

I really like the "black bezel" look that my altitude already has on the headlights, and was wondering if I bought oem projector's say off of ebay...could I remove them from the chrome housing and would they fit around the black housing that I already have? Sort of wanting the SRT8 Headlight look.

Any input is appreciated!:D

Even if they did this would require you to cut open the headlight. You do know this, right?

I've seen many pics on here of people doing retro fits and what not, but I don't have much of an idea of actually doing one myself. I have seen the process though.

If you do not have much experience with retrofits I will say they do require some skill to get things right. Some of the issues that can occur if not done correctly is condensation inside the headlight, hazing/fogging of the inside lens if the correct adhesive/sealants arent used or not used correctly, aiming projectors vertically, horizontally takes a lot of time and they must be aimed correctly. Last but not least, the headlights on Jeeps cannot be baked and taken apart. Unfortunately the lenses must be cut off then somehow re-attached and sealed

I dont mean to scare you, but im just stating some of the important things that must be done correctly for a retrofit to work right.

If you dont care to do a retrofit, but do have the know how to take the headlights apart, I think your best bet would to buy a set of used Overland/Limited HID headlamps on Ebay, then swap in your black bezels. From what i can tell the outside bezel is identical between the halogen Laredo headlights and the HID equipped Limited/Overland/SRT8 headlights.

Buy the 2012 SRT Bi-xenon headlights and retrofit them. Scottin06 can help you with this. He did this for his new Durango and it's similar to the Grand Cherokee. That would be the best way to go. Try moparonlineparts for the cheapest price. Someone on this forum did this and they were able to get those 2012 SRT headlights for $640 which is about half price; I don't know where the thread is or where they bought them from, sorry.

If you're going to retrofit ever, doing it on a larger headlight will make the entire process easier in my opinion. If you have the time and patience (mainly to study and learn the process) it's well worth it.

I say do the retrofit!

Here is my foolish advice to you.

1. Leave your stock headlights alone(save them and keep them intact.)
2. Buy a pair of Aftermarket laredo Headlghts from EBAY
3. These may be easier to bake open if the aftermarket company did not use the same sealant that the OEM manufacture uses.
4. Paint the bezel gloss black
5. Retro fit some Morimoto mini Hi bexons into the housing with some "Iris" style shrouds (closest to OEM in look) and reseal them

The reason I say this is because if you use the OEM bixenon headlight it gets complicated to keep the Highbeams from your laredo or flash to pass.

becasue the bixenon uses a 3157 bulb in the DRL position it forces you to get creative if you want to keep your 9006 hi beam bulb.


So far only two people have retrofitted Laredo headlight to bixenon here on JG that have announced it. They both had to cut the lip off the housing to free up the lense. gives the links a shot and you can decide

One person Here has Retrofitted the OEM bixenon to a laredo and they had to "jerry-rig" some halogen bulbs into the DRL position to keep high beams (not pretty)

THe DRL positon can't be used as a true high beam because it has the shield over the bulb with limits it range so you would have to run jumper to the shutter to get a true highbeam from the bi-xenon.

I have not given up on opening the OEM headlight housings but I am sure aftermarket ones would be easier.
