Engine Oil

It seems some people here have experienced engine oil burn, meaning they have to add more engine oil every so often in between regularly scheduled oil changes. I've read where some people put in a quart or so every 3k miles driven. How can you tell if your WK2 is burning this oil? I check the engine dip stick and it seems to be near the add oil line. Its on the crossed line section (ex. http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/Vi...3139_stick.jpg).

I also checked the engine oil before I turn on the Jeep, if that makes a difference. I'm really asking because I'm going to drive about 1000 miles over this week and wanted to be sure I don't get stranded while driving.

Thanks!

May get a couple more answers if you state if you have a V6 or V8. I assume that you are talking the V8. I would hope that you don't burn that much in 1000mi. That being said I always carry an extra qt of oil with me. But if you are checking consistently like you stated doesn't seem like you are burning much. Don't have the owners manual in front of me but check after warm, let it sit for about five minutes.

Thanks, Shortdustoff. I do have a V8 Overland 2012. So far it doesn't have many miles compared to many member here. Just about 2,200 miles. I got my first oil change at 1k miles as well. :)

mine does the same ,jeep service does not know why,, im tired of going for service to them, so i just carry some oil with me, hemi also needs a long time to drain back to the pan mine was at the add line with 2500 miles but i only needed 3/4 of the quart to get to full does that make sense ,is the dipstick short?

Re: Engine Oil

I'm not sure if it's short, but from the looks of the stick the add line to the end of the stick isn't that long. Ill see if I can gt a picture to show you what I mean with the add line

Jeep has a guideline document for oil consumption here .. http://wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0900112.pdf

They reckon the acceptable rate of burn for gasoline engines is 1 qt in 2,000 mi for the 1st 50,000 mi and then 1 qt in 750 mi.

That's it, thanks. Was your oil near the add line as well?

Got tired of waiting for light so had oil changed at 4k. 3.6 had not used any appreciable amount.
