Retrofit 2nd row overhead DVD screen

Looking for suggestions on the best way to add the 2nd row overhead DVD screen to my JGC. I was able to source the monitor out of the a junkyard vehicle for a pretty good price. It has a grey and white 32 pin connector on the back. Does anybody know what would be involved with retrofitting this factory solution? This appears to just be the screen, is there a separate player or is the HU used as a video source?

If too difficult to retrofit the factory system, can anybody suggest a good 3rd party solution? I doesn't look like I can easily put a screen in the JGC headrests so I prefer something roof mounted.

You can easily put headrest screens in the Jeep. They use brackets that mount around the rods for the headrest. It's how a lot of higher end German imports do it as well.

The overhead video screen (VES - Entertainment System) operates through the 430 or 730 series media center in the dash. It would be difficult to get your system operating without having the wiring harness from the GC it was removed from (the harness from the radio to the drop-down screen). Hard to tell, but you might need the OEM head unit in the dash that was programmed for the VES. Here are the links to the 430 and 730 system manuals:

Just curious.... Is it possible to fool the 730 system to think there is VES? Basically, provide a Video/audio input to the system so it can output video to a set of monitors connected in the rear?

I saw the other day that my 730 media center plays video when vehicle is parked. It will be nice if I can enable the system to play video and send the video output to a screen in the back while driving. My daughter is not old enough to safely handle a tablet in the rear on her own and is becoming too much of a work to keep her quiet on long drives. :)

Is there a wire I can "snip" to make it think the vehicle is in park when it is not? LOL.

I recently upgraded to a RBZ, and I am pretty sure I can get my local dealer to code it for a VES option, if so required. It sounds like the pieces required maybe;

1) MyGig media center (check)
2) Drop-Down Screen (check)
3) Harness from radio to screen.
4) Headliner made to fit the drop down screen.
5) Dealer coding for activation.

It's looking much cheaper to buy a $150 headrest integrated system and use the SD card slot to play media without using the vehicle head unit at all.

It sounds like you are describing a lockpick type solution. This will enable video in motion and allows for regular video outputs.

Yeah, lockpick is a $230 option to gain one feature. I am sure there is a hack....

Hey... I did not spend 45 grand on my Jeep. What's worth to one person may not be of the same worth to another. No need to get upset about what I want to spend on or not. :)

Anyways, did some searching and was hoping that there was some hack like this one.

Nope. It's all digital signals now, distributed over the CAN bus.
