4k RPM Redline

Well, not really a 4k redline, but has anyone else noticed that your Jeep has a 4,000 RPM rev limiter when in Park or Neutral?

For sh!ts & giggles I wanted to compare how loud the Jeep was at 6,000 RPM vs my '67, so I downloaded a free SPL app for my iPhone. I cranked up the Jeep and tried to rev to 6k and it stopped revving at 4k. I though that was odd, so I took it out for a spin and hit 6k easily. While coasting, I dropped it into Neutral, revved it and once again it hit 4k and just held steady. I parked it, put it in Neutral, and had the same result.

I've driven a few modern cars that have been rev limited near redline, but never seen one that has such a low limiter in Park/Neutral. Just thought it was odd and wanted to see if anyone else noticed this.

GM's have had that feature for a while. My WJ didn't have it but my WK does go figure.

My Ford Explorer has a park/neutral limit at 3500 rpm.

It is pretty much standard now for cars now not to rev past 3500 rpm in park.

german makes began doing this sometime back in 97 or 98.

i don't see the reason to rev your SUV past 4k in park/N mode - are you trying to impress the neighborhood kids? ;)

Your rods are thankful for the unloaded rev limit.

As others pointed out, it's to keep morons from blowing their engines (and expecting a new one free of charge under warranty).

I don't think I've driven a car from the past 5-7 years without this really.

My previous 2010 BMW M3 would rev to 8,300k (redline) in neutral once the oil temp was normal. But I would expect that from BMW on their M cars.
