2011 vs 2012 Gas Mileage

I noticed that the 2011 WK2's are listed at 22/16 and the 2012's are listed at 23/16. Did they do something different with the engine or get better mileage in 2012 or is this just marketing?

Transmission is my guess.

It's definitely not marketing as the test protocol is strictly controlled by the EPA.

The difference is:

2011 (have engine driven powersteering pump)

2012 (have electromechanical powersteering pump)

The reduced load on the engine must be good for 1 mpg.

Interesting, thanks for the reply

Is that true on both v6 and v8? I was under the impression that they did a PCM update that eeked out the extra mpg, and that they were flashing all 2011s (under a TSB or something) to the upgraded software so they would achieve the same mpg. Was this V8 only, or a figment of my imagination only?

The v6 mpg increase is because of the switchover to the electro-hydraulic steering pump. There's actually one less pully on engine block now than on the 2011s. That one less pully is good for an extra 1 mpg.

The v8 mpg increase is because of the reprogrammed transmission that gave it the pseudo/quasi 6th gear. No change to the steering (i don't remember if it already has the electro pump or not.)

Plenty of 2011s have the pump also, just not when it went to the EPA.

is it true that 2011 5.7 can be reprogrammed to add a 6th gear by tsb?
