Hard "CLUNK" when shifting into gear

Been experiencing a hard CLUNK or jolt lately when shifting the WK from Reverse into Drive. Seems like it is coming from front end but might be rear. Have also had occasional hard downshift when coasting downhill with no acceleration (not pressing gas pedal).

Any clues what I might be experiencing? Currently at 55K miles.

Check the bushings on your front differential

Ugh my dad needs those to be replaced on his Jeep...

Front diff bushing for sure. I had mine replaced last year at the dealer, it was about 250$ all said and done.

For $250 all said and done, surely they didn't replace all 3 bushings...because all 3 are close to $200 in parts alone.

OK thanks for the input - headed to the dealer in the morning to have it checked out. Don't guess this would be covered under an extended warranty? Probably wear-and-tear item...

Well doctors, excellent diagnosis - front diff bushing replaced. Thanks!!

And it was covered under my extended warranty!

never thought of that, mine is doing the same thing, its a 2006 5.7gc with only 53k. thnx. did you get any codes? mine says skips 4th gear when it down shifts. also does not go in to reverse all the way some times when stuck and makes banging noise... any thoughts

HemiDawg 08-24-2012 09:22 PM

No codes, but I just rolled 56k (I drive a long way to work), so we are just about in the same range mileage-wise.

You need to change out your Front Differential Bushing. I had mine changed out and it makes a big different. My old ones were shot.
