Landcruiser Prado

Hello !
What do you think about the Landcruiser Prado Diesel?

Really? The engine is way short of power and torque compared to the VM motari diesel. It is also louder with more NVH you can hear the diesel clatter. It's nearly 8 years old with little change. There is a newer engine available in Europe that brings it closer to the VM motari but not coming to Australia. I left a 120 series to come over to the WK2.

The prado is also only a 4 cylinder 3.0, and is less efficient than the A630 engine.

But, on the flipside there is lots of support for it. All depends on what you want.

Its a matter of taste.

I personally do'nt like the rear end styling of the Prado.
Furthermore the Jeep V6 3.0 CRD's torque is in comparison in another league.
Then again I do'nt want to drive what every one else is driving. ( This of course confirms that the Prado is a good dependable vehicle :D )

Re: Landcruiser Prado

Overall, I believe the Toyota LandCruiser to still be king of the 4WD's. However, price kills it in my household, and that is why I went down the Jeep road. The thought of a V8 diesel makes my mouth water. I drove the latest model, and it really is smooth and quiet.
Technology on the Toyota appears to be a few years out of date, compared with the Jeep, but then the reliability overall on the Toyota is better.
Unfortunately, the Prado, as already pointed out has a small motor with inadequate torque. The Kakadu model does look the part though, but again, pricing makes you think twice. Many are buying it because of the extra seating.
You can buy 2 GC's for the price of 1 LandCruiser.

Re: Landcruiser Prado

I'll be honest. The FJ Cruiser would have got a look in with me if their was a diesel. But the fact that it's only petrol turned me straight off it. That's a strange decison by Toyota, given the FJ is built on the same platform as the Prado.

only has 2.5 ton tow waste of time and way too dear

Down side also to the Toyota you still feel like you are sitting in a truck and it still looks like a truck, fine if you are going to spend 99% of your driving time off road where at least the Jeep has a nice town car feel at the end of the day when it is not working the dirt and the new FJ toyota apart from being petrol needs more money spent on it to add a long range tank to give it some acceptable travel distance which is pretty poor on toyota's standard considering how much you have to pay for it.

My opinion on Prado.
Negatives: Too slow, too expensive, old tech, not attractive outside, butt ugly inside (who's idea was the tree stump in the middle of the dash), very average to drive on the road.
Positives: Strong reliability (helped by avoiding latest technology), excellent off road, 7 seats, resale.

I made my decision (based on 90%+ on road driving, design taste and saving $25K), you just need to identify your priorities.

Re: Landcruiser Prado

The ONLY possible advantage I can see that the Prado has in terms of off road capability is the live rear axle. However I would argue that the quadra drive system in the Jeep is superior to the Prado 4wd system (I've seen several of them get bogged in soft, deep sand that the GC had no problems with). The GC is technically superior on many fronts.
The diesel D4D diesel in the prado is pathetic in both the torque and power departments.
Finally to complete my assault on the Prado (hey this is a Jeep forum right?), I am yet to see anything but anectodal evidence of superior reliability of the Prado vs the wk2.
