Power steering fluid question...

I need to top off my power steering fluid, but im not sure what kind of fluid to buy. A lot of people say to only buy mopar fluid from the dealer or bad things will happen. Is there any other brand that is an equivalent replacement that i dont need to go to the dealer to get? Or are those people just full of bull?

Unfortunately, you're stuck using the dealer stuff. There is not a comparable hydraulic fluid available (that I've ever heard of...)

Depends on what you consider ridiculous!

I believe the last time I was charged about $15 per qt.

Interesting. I didn't know that we needed to use dealer fluid on the power steering...but I don't think I've ever needed to top it off, so that's good at least.

Anything that meets chrysler specification MS-10838, a quick search showed me that it apparently doesnt have any aftermarket supplier for this fluid.

Do any of you guys know why it needs a special fluid?

Re: Power steering fluid question...

Not precisely.

I have heard it is because the cooling fan is also run off the hydraulic system, and not just the power steering, requiring a more versatile fluid...but I have not heard anything authoritative on the subject.

I do know if you mix some ATF in there, your pump will not last long and your rack will likely be damaged as well.

It seems strange to me that the fan is run off of the power steering pump. I wonder what the advantage is over an electric fan.....Hmmmm

The reasoning I've heard is to reduce strain on the motor for when it is under heavy load (such as towing).

Re: Power steering fluid question...

There shouldnt be any extra strain from an electric fan though...

A hydraulic motor is far more powerful (more torque) than an equivalently sized electric. If you are short on space/weight and already have a hydraulic pump running it makes sense.
