2000 3.1td transmission problem

my dads haveing problems with his jeep
it all started last week all driveing fine and then he booted it down a by pass and now complaines that it feels like it is stuck in 2nd gear when pulling away but still changes to 3rd
then he was on the motorway and said it was not going in to top gear as it was revving its tits off trying to do 70
so there seems to be no 1st gear working and top gear
i dont personly no how many gears his 1 has but its only done 40k of old person driveing

i will get home and chuck a strap on scanner to it AND DO the key cycle to c if i can pull any code of it but any help in the mean time to put me a step ahead
would be great

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

Do you know which transmission is connected to the 3.1td?

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

Some Googling learned that it should have the 44RE transmission. Most of the time the problem will be the governor solenoid or the pressure sensor. For each the pan has to be opened and mostly they are changed together. Lets see if any fault code is present.

Fault code is
Po743

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

1 Attachment(s)
The message means: TCC Enable Solenoid Circuit Electrical
So the problem is with the torque converter clutch solenoid or wiring. Donīt know this transmission, but this solenoid seems to be on the valve body together with the overdrive solenoid. It looks as on the attached picture.

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

The solenoid is inside the transmission and i donīt think that cleaning will help any. There should be an identification placard somewhere on the tranny casing, listing which one it is. But iīm almost sure its the 44RE.

I have no P/N, but the name is OD/TCC solenoid assy. (OverDrive/Torque Converter Clutch)

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

It can still be a wiring problem as well, so check the wirebundle for any chafing and/or damage and check connector plugs for dirt/corrosion. If that all seems to be fine, i think there would be no other way then to change the solenoid.

Re: 2000 3.1td transmission problem

checked out most of the wireing and plugs all seem fine
my dad seems to think that putting the bottle of lucas gear box additive is what has caused this problem what do you think on that i guess thet we are going tohave to get ths solanoid and hope thats fixes that
