Car charger safe?

Hello, is it safe To keep the car charger in the center console plugged in the cigarette lighter port? That one stays on even after the car is turned off. Is there any risk of over heating or draining the battery?

Over time, 12 volt phone chargers that are left indefinately connected either a) fail internally b) melt the power socket in the vehicle. Not all chargers are created equal either. Some can handle continuous use alot better than others.

Battery drain would be the least of my worries. Save yourself the headache and only connected the charger when needed.

You're quite welcome. I forgot to mention, if you choose to use a switched outlet such as the one below the AC controls, you would be a bit better off, but as I mentioned before, when it comes to phone chargers, I plug them in only when needed. The switched outlets work great for mobile phone docks, sat radio docks, etc...

OK, what?

A charger is not going to create enough heat at the socket to melt the power socket. Ever. In fact, it's likely fused such that it wouldn't be able to melt the power outlet even if left on forever and ever.

I'm not going to argue that the charger won't fail internally, but I will argue that the charger unplugged when not in use will eventually fail internally too. And given that the average lifespan of a mobile phone is ~2-3 years, and chargers are very cheap now that all phones worth looking at use mini-USB, there's no concern in having to replace a charger once in a while.

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific. From the socket failures I've seen due to continuous use (not just by way of the cigarette heating elements), this is the melting failure/melting I was describing in a nutshell. Note: this is NOT the type of sockets that our Jeeps use. This type of config is typically found in a dedicated lighter socket.
