Homelink Garage Opener Always On

My car is parked outside on most nights. I programmed the Homelink function but is appears it is always on even when the car is turned off. I don't want to add insult to injury if someone were to break into my car. Is there a way the Homelink can be disabled when the car is in the off position?

Yeah Homelink remains active even when the vehicle is turned off. Stupid imo but that's how it is. Not much you can do. You also have the same issue if you leave your garage door opener remote inside the vehicle.

The front side windows and the windshield on the WK2 are laminated. Good luck at the person who tries to smash through. They would need a sledgehammer. There is also the alarm if they open the door.

Thanks for the reply,

I was afraid of that. I just cleared out the Homelink buttons. I put my garage opener up under the dash where I can reach it using industrial velcro.

I don't think it would be too hard to rig up a fix. You would need 2 spade bits that fit whatever fuse feeds the homelink. Then a fuse holder and a 12v relay. Wire the relay coil one wire to ground and another to an ignition - hot lead. Then wire from one side of the fuse box through the fuse holder then through the relay switched leads and back to the fuse box. Result - the relay closes only when the ignition is on and cuts power to homelink when the ignition is off. Should be fuse M10 (15a) btw.

mav 44, you should have setting in you garage door unit to lock position at night
(or anytime you would like) where will turn off all remote access. then turned back on when you are ready. I hope that helps.

Thanks Brandont, I wonder if I fully cut power to the Homelink if it would loose the memory of the rolling code and have to be reprogramed each time???

Tipman71, That is a good idea but I would forget to unlock some mornings and go out the front door and hop in my car and leave. My wife would go out to the garage hop in her car and hit her button and nothing would happen until she got out and went and put the opener in unlock mode. After a couple of times of this I would eating Ramen Noodles every night :)

Pull the fuse for a hour, that should be enough time for the memory to clear if it is going to.

Be honest with you, I did not check this out myself as I never leave my vehicle parked out side at night, but did you look at the set up menus? I maybe mistaken but I beleive there is one for the door opener. I think you can turn it off? Seems foolish to disable it, if someone wants in your garage in most cases they are not going to break into your car first, they will smash the window out of garage, or smash the front door down to your house. I would relax and use S&W for your last line of defense...

As I always say, "don't worry about the dog.... BEWARE of the owner"!

Does nobody read the owner's manual?

"NOTE: HomeLink is disabled when the Vehicle Security Alarm is active."

If you want to erase all codes, don't mess around pulling the battery:

"Erase all channels before you begin training. To do this, press and hold the two outside buttons for up to 20 seconds until the red indicator flashes."

I just looked at my 2012 owners guide and I do not have this note listed. Was this is your Homelink section???

It's on on page 243 of the 2012 Owners Manual. Not sure about the Owners Guide.

Hah hah, seriously! I read my manual TWICE. (Once before I bought it) I still missed that tidbit. Always helps to have another set of eyes!

BTW, that note was on page 247 of the manual I downloaded. I think there are different versions / revisions.
