Deviational play in rear differential bearings normal?
 
Hello,

Have a look at this video;

I checked out my rear differential and found some play in the axle shafts:
  • there is some radial/tilting play in the rear axle shafts.If you rattle on the rear axleshafts it sounds in the car exactly like the clunking/rattleing I experience. By the way, both sides are the same! Hard to describe, that is why I made the video for.
  • there is also some rotary play in the axle shafts and drive shaft which I suppose is normal due to the backlash. Not sure if the amount is normal, but maybe that is the cause of the thumb when accelerating (see http://www.jeepgarage.org/f107/rear-bump-feel-when-accelerating-42770-5.html).
I am still on the search for the rear clunk/rattling in my 2012 Grand Cherokee V6 with Tow Package (see http://www.jeepgarage.org/f107/wk2-rear-knocking-noise-aussie-gc-laredo-37484-7.html). That is why I was also checking everything
With the drivetrain.

It is a 2012 V6 with QT2 so the 215mm (RII) (even while my build sheet states 195mm?)

Anybody knows if that play is normal? I would think it has to be snug while some rotary play would be normal. Thanks a lot for your replies.

Forgot to mention that I put the transfer case into Neutral to get any tensions out of the drivetrain. I would greatly appreciate if somebody can tell if that play is normal.

Ok, got some feedback from my dealer...its normal there has to be some play. They pulled another JGC with the same rear diff and it has the same play.

However, they put a STAR request in and asked for the specs.

I searched around a little bit and found this:
a. Using a dial indicator, check the backlash in the bearing shaft direction. Maximum: 0.7 mm (0.028 inch) If the backlash exceeds the maximum, replace the bearing.
b. Using a dial indicator, check the deviation at the surface of the axle shaft outside the hub bolt. Maximum: 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) If the deviation exceeds the maximum, replace the axle shaft.

Could anybody confirm these specs for the 195mm rear diff? Or check his diff the same way? My axleshafts have definitly more deviation play!!

Suther, since no one has responded I thought I would check mine. Fwiw, I checked mine (4570 miles) and it has very little to no play. I had to use a lot of force to get it to move very, very little. It didn't move at all like yours does. While I don't have the trailer tow package, I think we have the same 4x4 system. Also, mine was on the ground and I couldn't tell in your video if you had it jacked up. I hope this info is a little helpful. Good luck with this.

Thank you very much for the effort you put in. :thumbsup:That gives me some confidence and I will reengineer my dealer on this.

Mine was on the ground as well, did you have your Transfercase in Neutral? If mine isn't there is also no play at all in the drivetrain.
