Advise on First JEEP WK
I'm shopping for my first Jeep Grand Cherokee. Looking for 2005 - 2007 Black and not sure about getting a v6 or v8 (my budget is 7-10k)....

Ive seen mixed reviews about the V6 performance and some say the V8 4.7 or Hemi is best overall value / performance...

What do you guys think... I will drive this jeep every day in mix of city and highway driving...

Any thing is should look out for with a high mileage Jeep purchase? Any years better than others?

Go with the V8 if you can. I almost bought a 05 3.7 and some guys over at JeepForum talked me into saving for the V8 so I did. I found a great deal on one and I love it. The 4.7 gets pretty good gas mileage, I'm at 23 highway. The V6 is just to small to push a heavy suv IMO. Just drive both and ask yourself if it's worth it. My only regret is that I didn't get the 5.7!!

I might be wrong but these Jeeps don't really have a lot of expensive mechanical issues just small annoying things. Watch for a rough idle after highway driving, roll the windows down and shift through the gears and listen for clunks on the front end, make sure all the electrical components work, check fluids, brakes, and all the obvious stuff.

Some v6 guys get worse mpg than the v8 guys. A hemi would be nice but i think my 4.7 wk is just right.

I purchased a used 2007 GC Overland with the 5.7- absolutely love the vehical. Had the usual front end clunk which the dealer repaired- worn diff bushing, but otherwise has been good for the first month. My only concerns are with the amount of electronics, modules, sensors, solenoids etc that are present and could go bad- but nowadays that seems unavaoidable.

I LOVE my jeep. but i wish i had got the 5.7 hemi simply for the extra power.

There is a Gen 2 4.7 in the 08+ but still go hemi.

With a few minor bolt ons and a tuner(~$600) youll be getting about 15 city and 22 highway. 2Sh3a said it pretty good, the V6 is pretty small for the heavy jeeps.

I personally with my mods, ($1000+) and see 15-16 city and 26 highway @ 60 mph in my V6. Most of the hemi guys see 22 highway going 70-80 highway.

The V6 design is just not a good as it could have been and limits the power.

BOTTOM LINE, if you are going to be going faster than 60 on the highway, with anyone more than yourself, or towing... 5.7L Hemi

I have the 3.7L, and for my needs, I'm fine with it. I don't tow anything, nor am I trying to win any races, so I couldn't justify the extra cost of getting 4.7L or 5.7L V8. I say drive a few different WK engine options, and really think about what you need/want.

I personally love my 4.7L. I've got a friend with the V6 which she loves but she does a good amount of driving and has mentioned that mpg is not great and that it feels under powered for an suv. I average about 21-23 highway and 15 or so city.

go with what you can afford if youre not looking
for big time performance then either one will do.

a wk is a wk and at the end of the day what makes
a difference are the mods you choose to do =)

I've talked 4 of my friends into buying WK's after I bought mine. 3 of them have the 4.7's, one has the Hemi, and I'm the guy w/ the 3.7. The 4.7's get the best mileage. If you're absolutely positive you will only use it as a commuter car, and you have no plans of going off roading or hitting trails, then go with the 3.7 because of the lower upfront cost. Does great in snow. If you plan on doing the above, go for the 4.7 for the extra power and also you can get the QTII transmission or the Quadra Drive. The 3.7 does feel under-powered, and the best i've gotten on the highway is 19 mpgs. 4.7's get above 20.

Even stock I would see 21 highway. Time for a tune up ;)

As others have said, go test drive each engine within the same mileage(cant compare one with 60K and another with 110K) then decide.

MPG is going to be about the same on all, well maintained, WKs

i was kinda in the same boat as you a few days ago, I looked around at many different jeeps.. i finally settled on a v6 myself. I wanted the 4.7.. but the 3.7 is basically the same engine, minus two cylinders. Aside from that i was able to pick up a V6 with less than 20k miles on it , looks, feels, and drives as if it was new. I paid more than i should have, which is fine because it's in such great shape, and has extremely low miles.

Also, im not sure why people keep saying the car is underpowered.. It's in an SUV that weighs 4200 pounds. It's got 235Lb/tq. while it's not a muscle car or anything.. but it does WAY more than a daily driver needs. I got mine because it looks nice, and im about to have a kid. If you don't need / want to go off road ( which you still can in the 3.7 just fine ) but for mainly highway / city driving, the v6 does moreeee than enough. when i read forums, and did this stuff i was expecting to get into a 1.4L pinto when i wen't to test drive. and it was actually quite the opposite.

Any time a truck or car comes in trims with a higher engine, people will always always always say the higher trim engines are better, to most it just makes sense. but, that's not always the case. whoever said

Really makes no sense. the jeep has more than enough TQ to haul the jeep with 5 full adults over 60 on the freeway with no issues whatsoever. that's like saying, hey here is this school bus, but.. i wouldn't put any people in it, not unless you get the super nitro bus that has 23425354 horsepower. It's not a ford fiesta bud, the truck has plenty of power to do what it needs to do.
