Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - 2008, warning light & transmission over temp message

Hello,
My Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.7 which I bought in October 2007 has been showing problems for over a year now. Let me explain:

Let me start by saying, I am not one of those happy customers:
1) Because of the attitude of the dealer who only wanted to rip me off on ever occasion. Changed to a new dealer 150 km away since 2011
2) History of problems
3) Even after reporting to Jeep about the dealer attitude, Jeep never even responded.

Problem:
My car has been showing the "check engine" warning light once every few 100 or thousand kilometers. Dealer has not been able to give me a fix, nor been able to tell me what the problem is.

When I drive in traffic and idle, the car starts to vibrate / jump and seems its going to run away and then suddenly the warning light comes on. I always have my AC on, due to the weather (I am from Dubai).

This never happens on straight road or highway without any traffic.

Two weeks back the dealer asked me to replace both relay fuses (HVAC and Engine). Replaced with a 5 pin fuse even though the one present was 4 pin but the dealer said its fine to replace with a 5 pin. The problem still persists.

Yesterday I noticed a warning "Transmission Over temp" as soon as i insert my key and turn on (before ignition). It stays for a fraction of a second that I had to turn on and off my key almost 10 times to read the warning. Never seen this error while driving. The temperature sensor always slays below half.

I have lost hope with the dealer as I have spend weeks and a lot of money with the dealer with no result. Atleast the second dealer is far better than the first.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards,

J

It is unfortunate to hear you are having problems with your vehicle.

I can undertstand why the dealer is having such a hard time - this is a problem that occurrs once every "hundred or thousand kms". It's going to be tough to troubleshoot as the likelihood of having it at the dealer when it is having problems is slim unless you leave it with them for a while.

Have you left it with them for a week or two to see if they can replicate the issue? What codes are being stored? Does the check engine light reset itself or does it have to be cleared? What maintenance has been done?

In sum, there are all sorts of things that could cause your symptoms and the only thing more difficult than trying to diagnose a problem that occurs as infrequently as yours is trying to do it over the internet! If you want some help you are going to have provide way more detail (codes, what the dealer has replaced, etc).

Dr. Lee,

I have left the car with the dealer for over 10 days twice. Either the dealer never tried to replicate the problem or it never replicated (as per the dealer). Not sure if thats true. The problem starts to happen mostly as soon as I am stuck in traffic and idling.

Every time I ask the dealer about the code, he says nothing has been registered and its minor things. Most of the time the check engine light resets by itself, for instance I had it on Sunday and Monday its gone.

As per the dealer, they have checked the transmission, fuel pump, replaced both HVAC and Engine relay fuses.

My simple thought about this issue was that the engine is not getting sufficient air as the car is stuck in traffic and I never have the problem on an open road, so it should be a faulty sensor, but as per the dealer he has never replaced a MAF sensor in 5 years. Some recommended to replace the MAF and Crank Position Sensor, but again the dealer said that he does not think its a sensor.

J

Just putting this out there... if the dealer couldnt figure it out with codes, there is NO hope of even possible suggestions without them for us. We need DTC's.

Thank you for the reply.

That's the story from the dealer that he was unable to find any error codes. Not sure if the dealer even ran any diagnostics. Never have had a success rate with dealers in this part of the world, me not being the first unsatisfied customer.

Is it possible that the error code never gets registered? Is it possible for a car with so many sensors not to leave a mark on the system?

This time I want to go to the dealer and have the test performed in front of me so that I am sure that no codes have been registered. Also I want to go prepared with as many probabilities and possible causes for the problem, so each and everything can be ruled out. Something I have chasing for almost 15 months.

So any help, suggestions is most welcome.

Regards,

J
