Checking oil level: oil all over the place!

It is very difficult to get an accurate oil reading from the dipstick on my 2012 Overland Hemi. No matter how many times I wipe it clean and re-insert it, the dipstick comes out of the engine so covered in oil that it is almost impossible to tell what the actual oil level is.

I run the engine, and let it sit for 5 minutes as the manual specifies. I remove the dipstick and wipe it clean, then re-insert it. When I remove the dipstick again, it has spots of oil all over the place, both at the bottom where the markings are and further up, and it is often impossible to tell where the actual oil level is because of the random drops of oil.

I've never had this problem on my other cars. It is like the dipstick is installed in the pan in such a way that oil drips all over it. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes. I also have a hard time. After putting it in at several different positions, i.e., twisting dipstick, I get a good reading of the oil level.

Except after I do an oil and filter change, I check the oil after its been sitting in the garage overnight. Then its easy to read.

Try removing the dipstick which releases the vacuum that has been created in the dipstick tube, let oil drain from tube for five minutes or so and then dip and check oil level. If the motor is very cold it takes longer for the oil to settle to the correct level.
