How do you determine MSRP? (not a dumb question)
 
Maybe a philosophical question, but how do you determine MSRP? Do you go by the vehicle's sticker price or current MSRP on jeep.com? They differ. I know jeep.com will factor in rebates in calculating final price...but they list the final price as MSRP.

Edit: I wanted to add that the difference I'm talking about is not a rounding error. For a particular vehicle I'm looking at, the difference is about $3K.

Sticker. I don't know why Jeep.com takes off the price like that. Its quite annoying when you are trying to get the total price.....

Who cares what MSRP is? If you are shopping for a new car, I would suggest going to a site like Edmunds.com and see what the invoice price is. I would use that as your starting point. I wouldn't go anything above $500 over invoice. Even at the invoice price, the dealer is still making money with their holdback. If you go in informed knowing exactly what you want, what it costs, and what you are willing to pay, it should be a no brainer for the dealership as they have to do very little work to complete the sale.

is the difference between invoice and MSRP is what you see. what you dont see is the factory-to-dealer rebates they receive on most if not all vehicles. UNLESS it is an limited edition and im talking 1-250 nation wide limited editions (not these different wheels, badged and stripe limited editions Challengers like our yellow jacket) you should not be paying more than 500 above invoice. When I negotiated the deal for our 2011 Qx56 the sticker was north of 70g. I got it for 500 above invoice only because their were only 5 in the whole USA with the ext/int color combo that we wanted. This was when the japan tsunami hit and they could not ship anything over.

Thanks for the replies and I agree, to me retail/list/MSRP is all BS. The reason I'm asking though is, in a lot of "what did you pay" threads, they generally report how they did against MSRP. "I paid 10% off MSRP", or "it was listed at X and I paid Y". I was just curious how the general public viewed MSRP.

In my situation I'm several thousands below invoice, but when I started the negotiation I told them my target was X% off MSRP. Because "MSRP" on Jeep.com is $3K less than the sticker, I wanted to verify if I was use the right unit of measure.

By the way, I confirmed that the masses us the vehicle sticker when calculating MSRP. I had posted on other forums.

I think you might be getting your terminology mixed up. I believe MSRP is the sticker. "Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price"

You are looking for dealer cost, which is somewhere below invoice or tissue.

IMO, I would have never told them how much you were willing to pay. You could have gotten a better deal... below what you were going to pay. Plus, if you walk in there and tell them you can get the EP price, they will print out how much their invoice is along with their hold back price. Now you can see how much room they are working with.

My target price was pretty aggressive. I asked for 13.5% off MSRP, which ended up being $2,500 less invoice. I planned on contacting multiple dealers via email, and this was my first stop. I wanted to get grounded on a what a attainable price was for these models. I ended up getting I believe 13% off. I then shopped around with the other dealers and found that no one else could beat this price. So I think I'm driving a good deal because I shot pretty high.
