Pentastar tick
I had a chance today to compare the sound of my 2012 pentastar with a build of 4/12 to a 2011 GC pentastar with a build of 6/11. The 2011 has no tick or very little. The 2011 had 16K on it and mine has 7700 . On mine if your standing by the drivers door it sounds like the tick is from under the jeep like in the area for the catalytic converter but if I open the hood I can hear a tick from the left head. I would not say its real loud but I can hear it and I don't hear it on that 2011. It seems from reading the boards that most of the ones with the bad heads have been 2012's and some late 2011's. If you read the wrangler forums it seems its all they talk about. I am just wondering if some change was made along the way that created this issue as it seems the early ones don't have it. The wrangler did not have the pentastar for 2011 it was added for 2012 and it almost seems thats when the issues started. I think I might take it in even though it runs good it just drives me nuts now that I have picked up on it.

Re: Pentastar tick
It sucks that there are so many people having issues with the v6. Chrysler is playing down how many people are affected. I hope Chrysler makes it right for everyone.

This was one of the big reasons I opted for the hemi and decided not to wait for the 8 speed. It seems like most companies have some major issues in the first couple of years. I know the first year the hemis were produced they were breaking valve spring and had ticking issues. They're bulletproof now though.

I'm really itching to get the 8 speed but I think I'll wait a few years.

Re: Pentastar tick
It is interesting that there was a flurry of media talk around 15 August but very little since. I would have thought some information would surface after Vegas. It does seem that the heavier vehicles have a higher incidence of Pentastar head issues.

Going out on a limb a little but sounds a lot like an overlean condition primarily in #2 but ocassionally in #4 & possibly with an overtenp/substandard gasoline (which could induce detonation) component.

Re: Pentastar tick
I went in and talked to the dealer and they said they have never heard of this issue. I told them I would bring it in in the next couple weeks to get checked out.

This is a pretty good article to show the dealer:

Re: Pentastar tick
Any dealer that says he doesn't know about the issue must value his job more than customer care.

Re: Pentastar tick
My jeep was just repaired under warranty for the ticking problem, they replaced all 12 lifters on the left head and the ticking noise is now gone. I will be keeping an eye on it in case case the noise comes back. Good luck to anyone who has to deal with this problem.

Re: Pentastar tick
I am taking mine 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 into the dealer tomorrow for a ticking sound almost like an exhaust leak. Mine has done it since day one. I thought it was just because it has been sitting for months. I have almost 2000 miles on it and it is still there. My vehicle build date is June 2012. From reading other forums there is a date code on the engine. I am going to try to find that to see what the engine date is. I am also getting a pulsating vibration in my steering wheel and floor when going up an incline around 55-65 mph the vibration gets faster and more noticeable with the RPMs when it downshifts into 4th. It may do it at higher speeds I just have not driven it enough since my wife drives it mostly.

That tick, tick, is the time bomb.
