Help with picking exhaust - Need opinions/experience

Hey All

I recently ordered a new 2013 GC Altitude w/ the Hemi. I'm waiting until I actually have it and driving it everyday before I start ordering other parts (CAI, PTB, etc), but I want to try to get the exhaust picked out so I can get it on as soon as possible. I noticed it was very quiet on the test drive and that isn't going to work for me:D

My wife drives a 2007 Dodge Ram w/ the 5.7 and we had a Magnaflow muffler put on it and it's great. Her truck has MDS on it and when it kicks on, the sound doesn't bother me too much, so I don't think drone will be a problem for me (if I'm understanding drone correctly)

I think I want a cat back system instead of just a muffler since I might be able to get a tiny bit of extra performance out of it (especially when a tuner comes out).

So far I have been researching Corsa, Borla, Dynomax and Magnaflow cat back setups. I'm having a hard time picking from these 4 systems which one will sound like what I'm after. This is going to be my new DD so I want something aggressive/loud, but nothing that is going to get me pulled over for being too loud. I live in the Bay Area so there are plenty of CHP around. I'm also trying to make sure whatever I get is 50 state legal because I plan on keeping this Jeep as long as possible and will eventually be smogging it (like my current 2000 GC)

I'm not a big fan of the Corsa from what I've seen because it seems very quite at idle and low speed/acceleration. Can anyone with those setups chime in with opinions? I've been lurking around the board for about a week now as well as youtube, etc trying to find a clear winner.

Sorry for the long post, just want to make sure I do it right from the start and not end up with something disappointing.

Thanks!

I have no experience with the JGC and exhausts. I'm waiting on the reviews on the Gibson and tuning to be available before I really start digging in to it. But i've had and heard Borla's on numerous vehicles and I've never been disappointed with the sound.

If you search the forum you'll find some vid clips of the different options. Obviously not close to hearing the real thing but better than all the other subjective reviews you may find on the different systems.

I had a Gibson cat-back on my TrailBlazer SS...I have a sound clip of me reving it.
I love it...absolutely no drone at all ...and a went through a few different exhaust systems for that reason...I was driving my exhaust shop crazy....lol

I called borla and corsa and they corsa claimed a 7 HP gain and borla a 14 HP gain... I would get borla... I'm waiting until a programmer comes out...

I've been doing a lot of looking and listening and I think I've got it narrowed down to the Borla or the Magnaflow. I'm still pretty stuck between the two though. I got to test drive another Hemi JGC today and I definitely need it to be much louder than it is. Hopefully by the time my Jeep gets delivered I'll have it picked out.

I had a chance to talk to a couple local shops and they both said to go with the Borla. I've also been reading that the Borla system will be louder than the Magnaflow which is what I want. I've searching/lurking and checking out all the sound/video clips I can find so I'm pretty sure that's the way I'm going to go.

Next up is picking a CAI :)

I did a pretty long review of the Corsa system on youtube if you haven't already found it:

2011 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit Corsa Exhaust - YouTube

and

2011 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit Corsa exhaust, windows - YouTube

If shear noise is what you want, Corsa isn't it. If you want quiet when you want quiet, and loud when you want loud, then this is right up your ally.

Thanks for the reply. I did find your videos and it does sound good, but like you said, it sounds stock at idle and I need a little more noise :) I do really like your videos and I appreciate the large amount of effort you put into them and the quality.

Glad you found them helpful one way or the other! I love the Corsa system, but its strength to some is its weakness for others - the whole point I made the videos.

Keep us up to date on what you do please and post some videos when you're done! Even though the ship has sailed for me it doesn't mean I wouldn't like to know what else is out there!

Re: Help with picking exhaust - Need opinions/experience

+1 on Corsa I also purchased the Corsa for my 5.7L. Seeing as how I bought mine for luxury, I was afraid to try anything "loud". I've heard louder for sure. Just out of curiosity, anyone else who chimes in on suggestions, would you mind mentioning if there was a gain or loss in MPG. I drive mostly city and lost a little over 1 MPG. Now is it because it's more fun to get on it or did it truly decrease the fuel economy? Hmmm....

Best wishes in your quest!

Love my corsa, exactly as stated above quiet at idle but sounds great at WOT, not sure about mpg as it was installed upon delivery at dealer. I already new mpg was not great before buying the jeep, wiil be worse once the tuner installed, but I supose that it can be set for better gas mileage as well. Just my opinion.
