2011-2013 Antenna Mast Lengths

For those of you that have garage clearance issues with your 2011 JGC antenna mast, looks like the 2012-2013 model years offer a shorter version. My original antenna was 11" long, the new one is 8" long. I was having to remove the antenna every time I pulled in the garage. This will definitely help with convenience. Bought a few "universal" ones and they did not adapt to the factory thread.

First production runs of WK2 had a longer antenna. I see a few around town with them.

I don't understand why so many vehicles are using masts. I currently have an Acura MDX that has a hockey puck on the roof. The entire thing is smaller than the mounts on most brands.

The reception is great. They use a combined Nav/Radio (including satellite) made by Alpine.

I chose the MDX because I was doing a lot of kayaking and throwing plywood on the roof rack quite often. Never have to remove or worry about breaking anything.

I hope the '14 GC goes to something like this.

Install the shark fin antenna and you get even lower profile and easier clearance!

It's probably just an easy way for some companies to cut costs. Don't the vehicles with the factory sharkfin-style antennas on the roof still have the radio antenna built into the glass (which, of course, is a lot more expensive)? My wife's Maxima is that way.

I think my 2011 has the shorter antenna. Universal stub antenna typically don't have the right size thread adapter for chrysler products, but there are several cheap ones on ebay that do. The one I bought for our Liberty a couple years ago works well. Some here just cut down the OEM antenna without much loss in AM sensitivity... but how any here listen to AM radio anyway except for traffic reports.

Hockey puck and shark fin antennas are much more money to build and still have patent issues I think. AM performance is pretty tough to implement, FM is no issue. You typically need receivers with higher sensitivity (higher cost) for them to work well enough. Thats close to $50 more per car, big bucks for manufactures trying to save 50 cents per car.
