Pentastar Ticking Again...

Im taking my jeep back to dealer today because the engine started to tick badly after i got back from a 50 miles trip and its coming from the left side head again. They supposedly replaced all the lifters in the left head a couple weeks ago and it was quiet until i went out of town yesterday, im kinda pissed about this, i now have 5300 miles and it going to have to be worked on again. I guess i may have to talk to Chrysler, but hopefully the dealer will fix it this time.
Im going to post a clip of the noise on youtube this evening and a link to it so you all can hear it. will keep everyone updated...

I thought the fix was to replace the complete head?

Re: Pentastar Ticking Again...

No CEL indicator? I don't think they replace the head, the first time, unless there is a CEL.

Re: Pentastar Ticking Again...

No cel yet, but it has a miss in it and bogs down at stop lights/signs, this is not good especially when i travel out of town and have to worry about a new car breaking down..

What are the ODB-II misfire readings ? (ave & last cycle)

Re: Pentastar Ticking Again...

Bogging down and missing is not a symptom of the head issue. That throws a CEL as well as ticking. I think you have something else going on.

I think I read maybe a year ago that there were some V6s leaving the factory with debris left in the block oil passages. That could clog up a lifter, I dunno, but I though those were export models, however, and all had been recalled. There was some other symptom associated with that issue I think.

see:

Chrysler To Replace Engine on 2012 Dodge Charger, Other Vehicles in Recall

Perhaps you have something similar going on.

Well all I know is it is not running like it should and the ticking sound is not normal for any new vehicle with only 5500k miles. If they won't fix it, then I'll just drive it until the motor blows, and then maybe I'll get a new motor out of it or a new jeep... Well see.. Its at the dealer, they're checking on it right now and I'll know soon if I'll Need a rental car or not.

This sounds like its the head problem. The head problem will cause missing the cel is a misfire fault. The recall was something different that was debris in the blocks not being properly flushed which could cause main bearing failure and the engine to lock up. It was only about 2 weeks of production and the engines were replaced on those vehicle before even sold in most cases. What you have is the bad head which the dealer should have known and replaced the first time. It makes no sense to replace just the lifters.

The dealer couldnt do anything for me Friday, so I'm bringing it in Monday morning and they are going to put me in a rental car. The dealer called Chrysler and they assigned a rep to decide what to do since this is the second time for the same problem. Ive driven it over 200 miles this weekend and the noise has since gotten worse and it is starting to miss more at idle and while accelerating. This is unacceptable:mad:,I am upset at this entire ordeal and i told the service manager and the dealership owner i will NOT take the car back if they have to replace the engine or rebuild it because it will never be the same and i will not pay for a new 2012 5500k mile vehicle that's already had motor work done to it. They're probably just going to replace the lifters again.. but ill find out soon enough.. Ive got all documentation and I'm starting to seek legal advice on what to do next.. i will keep everyone updated..

Whats the problem with this dealer? This is a well known problem and the fix is to replace the the entire head as an assembly not just the lifters. The noise came back beause they put new lifters in a defective head. How loud is the noise at this point? Can you hear it inside the jeep with the windows closed? If you can get them to replace the head as they should the jeep should be fine and hopefullly you won't have another problem with it.

I can hear the noise with the windows up,while accelerating and at idle, it kinda sounds like a rod knock Clack clack clack clack tick tick tick...
The service manager said he never seen this problem in a pentastar v6 before so i had to raise cane the first time to get him to look at it and he's the one who told them to put new lifters in it. When i took it back Fri the service manager was out on a cruise vacation so the asst service manager called Chrysler and they opened another claim and this time they assigned a representative to make a decision to either let the dealership repair the engine again or to give me a replacement jeep. Right now im pursuing legal advice regarding lemon laws in my state, just in case the dealer or chrysler doesn't get this problem fixed, because i didn't spend my hard earned $$$ to buy a new vehicle only to have the motor already needing repairs at 5500k Miles!!!

I think if they just replace the head all your problems will go away.
