Fuel Tank reserve....

So i believe my 07 GC OVerland has a 21.5 gallon tank = 82 litres. When my gauge shows empty, and my dash says zero kms to empty, I can only put about 62 to 64 litres of fuel in my tank. Is the remaining 20 or so litres actually reserve fuel? Seems like a lot if so...

mine seems to have a 3 gallon reserve.

Thats about 11.5 litres, still seems there is more in my reserve. Guess the only way to know for sure is to run her dry...

Re: Fuel Tank reserve....

that can badly damage the fuel pump so i just follow the gauge lol

I don't usually let my tank get too low. But it would be nice if manufacturers would list the 'reserve' amount as part of the specs.

Its my understanding Jeep leaves an extra ~3 gallons to keep the fuel pump cool and because people like me wait to get gas until the light turns on. Rather than run it dry if you are really curious pump it out into a container and measure it.

Yep, I know that fuel keeps the pump cool- wasn't going to run her too low. I hate to see the tank get past halfway, but I have been getting around 400 kms a tank but if a tank for me is essentially just 62 litres then I guess that is about right.

Re: Fuel Tank reserve....

Other day driving home from school, my light came on about 15 miles from home, then I drove into town on top of that to fill up (another 9 miles) and still could only get about 18 gallons in there. So it's got to be ~3 gallons

'08 FSM says low level alarm is set at 11% capacity. Because the tank is flat on bottom, much if that volume is likely not usable.

My experience is that there is somewhat more fuel than that left in the tank at the alarm point.

Re: Fuel Tank reserve....

The 3 gallon 'safety' mark is correct. I was always curious why the max I had pumped into the tank was 19.2, even though the capacity was rated at 21.1 gallons. After an off-roading incident dented the original tank pretty badly I had to replace it, and was able to prove to myself the tank's actual capacity. It really is just over 21 gallons from bone dry.

The really cool thing they managed to do was manipulate the fuel guage to accomodate this reserve. My guage is spot on for the top 3/4's. If it sits at half a tank, I will fit right about 10.5 gallons in, and at 1/4 tank it will take just over 15.5 gallons. The reserve is all accounted for in the bottom 1/4 on the guage. If you watch it on long drives you can actually see that the last 1/4 tank drops way faster than the top 3/4's. I ignore the light, and just use the guage. When it stops moving when I make turns or change speeds quickly, that's when I stop for fuel. At that point, I usually get about 19 gallons in.
