Front differential issue

So, for the last couple of days, I've felt a kind of juddering from the front end, like something is rubbing. It is also kinda noisy, but you only hear it inside the cab. Decided to have a look at the diff, as it was the only thing I could initially think off and discovered a leak:slapfight:. Seems to be leaking from the pinion seal. That in itself is no biggy. But question is, would low fluid be the cause of this grinding/sticking sound/feel:confused:. Or could it be something more serious??

I replaced the fluid about 9 months ago, with proper Mopar oil and LSD additive.

Thanks in advance :D

How low is buddy? Can you reach it with a finger?

Not checked it yet Dave. Won't be able to until tonight, but there was a sizeable puddle of fluid and it definitely looks like its coming from the seal.

Forgot to mention, I only feel this rubbing/ juddering through the throttle pedal

Take care not driving around with low fluid level, because you will certainly end up with damage to the diff and/or bearings.
If you can't change the seal now, keep at least the level normal to prevent more serious things to happen.
So check the level and look if you see any metal chavings in the fluid.

Oh it won't be going anywhere Frank. Although my daily journey is about 20 miles, I'm not gonna risk it. Too many things to go wrong as you say. Fingers crossed the part is in stock though.

Re: Front differential issue

Ok just been out to check the fluid levels, damn it's cold! Level is pretty much full! I do park a slight incline and I mean slight, but when I removed the cap, fluid came straight out. More or less perfect.

I do have a worn tie rod end on the passenger side, which I've been meaning to do for months and the tracking is off too. Could this be anything to do with what I'm experiencing??

The seal however, is definitely leaking very slightly.

Aaron half of all WJ's on the road have a front pinion seal leak to some degree or another. It's very common. I wouldn't worry about it unless there's a drastic change down the road. From what your describing I'd maybe give your motor mounts a look see and check to see if that new exhaust pipe didn't shift against something. Good luck bro.

Thanks Dave. I've now noticed its more from the drivers side (uk). Took the wheel off and noticed there's a very slight tear in the cv boot. It's not throwing grease too badly, there's a slight ooze.

Could this be the cause?

Don't know for sure buddy but I come from the old school of find a tear replace the joint. The damage is already done. Seen too many people over the years replace the boot only to have the joint fail a few months later. You have to tear it all apart anyway. I'd still suspect something under the hood if you're only feeling it in the pedal and not the floor or steering wheel. You sure the exhaust isn't touching the trans cross member?

x2 on front pinion seal. Always shows a few drops on driveway, i always check it, and level is always full. One of these weeks im gonna take it in to my local shop to have it replaced. (Timken # 5778). Its a simple job, but takes some precision and experience to get that pinion nut on right, I would prolly mess it up, so until then i just check it frequently.

Re: Front differential issue

Yeah I had to replace the rear pinion seal a couple of years ago. I'm ordering a new one for the front. Not sure if I'm up to doing it myself lol.

Dave, checked everything and all seems well. I'm now convinced it is the cv joint. The tear in the boot is bigger than I thought and I don't know how long it's been like that, so I'm gonna replace it anyway and hope that's it.

Am I right in thinking the axle shaft slides right out once the hub etc is removed? Also I can only seem to find just the joint for sale without the ACLU shaft.
