MIL Light stays on
 
I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7L Hemi. Today when I went out to the store, the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light, looks like an outline picture of the engine) stayed on the entire trip. It usually comes on at startup and goes out along with the other idiot lights. I checked for a loose gas cap and also checked for any loose wires under the hood for the air sensor on the intake and that sort of thing. According to the owner's manual, another possible cause is poor quality fuel, but we filled it up from almost empty 3 weeks ago, and it's now only down to half a tank, so I would think that if it was bad gas that it would have happened a lot sooner than 3 weeks later. The light stays on whenever the engine is running now. I searched the forums, and there's a couple of threads that talk about the Off-On-Off-On-Off-On ignition key sequence to get the EVIC to display a more meaningful code, but that sequence must be for older models, as it doesn't cause any codes to appear. There are no messages in the menu system either. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing the light to stay on, or what the proper sequence is to get the EVIC to display the error codes on my model? Thanks in advance.

I took mine to the dealer a few months ago for the same issue, and they ran this TSB flash that took care of the problem. I know it says 2012 models, but I believe it also applies to late-build 2011 models also. Your dealer needs to verify what code is tripping the MIL, and then fix the problem. The MIL will likely eventually go out on it's own, but might return:

Justal13, thanks. I've been looking through the TSBs, and there are a lot of them referencing the MIL light coming on for various codes. They all say to "Reprogram the PCM with the latest software". Hopefullly mine is throwing one of the known codes and the dealer will reprogram mine to the latest as well. The pain is that I just switched jobs and I won't be able to take off during the week for a while, and my wife is in the same boat, plus the dealer is almost an hour away, so it may be a while before we can get it in, and in the mean time, the PCM is running in "limp home" mode so we don't get the fuel economy provided by the "ECO" mode. Hopefully they can take it in on a Saturday.
